Her chest heaved with heavy breaths as memories of her time with Xavier flashed through her mind. Hands shaking, she dialed his number.

She clutched the phone to her ear, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Suddenly, the line began to ring.

He had taken her off his blocked list.

Two rings later, Xavier's deep, frosty voice came through. "Ms. Sterling?"

"I've thought it over."

The voice on the other end dropped dangerously low. "You're going to give me his contact information?"

"No,"

She would never betray Axiom. Instead...

...

Out in the hallway, Frederick frowned.

Charles had flown back to China this morning after discovering a new lead in their corporate crisis.

Other than him, there was no one left in the city who could bail her out.

Who was she calling?

A few minutes later, the door swung open.

Lydia walked out, her face pale, looking at him with the chilling indifference of a stranger.

Frederick immediately grabbed her hand.

She snatched it back instantly and walked straight to the officer.

Just then, a higher-ranking captain strode into the room. "The victim's family has dropped the charges. It was a misunderstanding. Mrs. Foster was merely counseling them; there was no bribery involved."

Lydia let out a shaky breath. "Am I free to go now?"

The captain nodded.

Before Frederick could even call her name, she practically sprinted out of the precinct, pulled open the door of a black luxury van waiting by the curb, and vanished inside.

By the time Frederick rushed outside, all he saw were the vanishing taillights.

A black sedan immediately peeled out after the van.

It was the security team he had assigned to monitor Lydia.

Seeing that, he relaxed slightly.

But how the hell had the situation resolved itself so quickly?
