The hallway fell silent after the order was given. Everyone stood there, waiting. Summer was still sitting at the bottom of the stairs, clutching her arms as if they were broken. Her breathing sounded shaken, and her eyes were full of tears. She almost looked pitiful.

“Grandpa…” she whimpered. “My whole body hurts…please take me to the hospital.”

Her voice trembled weakly, but the old man’s face was cold. “No, not yet.” He said firmly.

“If we are checking the truth tonight, then we will check properly.” I could see the moment Summer’s heartbeat dropped. Mother rushed to meet her daughter.

“Dad, look at her. She just fell down the stairs. She could have a concussion.” She said anxiously.

Summer sniffed pitifully, leaning into her mother’s arms. “Mom, my head hurts…”

“We should take her to the hospital first; this can wait,” Father added.

Without waiting, Father told the butler to call the car. I saw relief flood Summer’s face. She had plans; maybe she wanted to buy herself some time to clean the surveillance cameras.

“Let her go, but bring the surveillance footage here,” grandfather said. The butler nodded.

“Yes, sir,” and he was gone.

Father helped Summer to stand while mother helped from the other side, and, as dramatic as she was, she leaned heavily against them, pretending she couldn’t walk, but I could tell she was trying to delay the whole thing so she could alter the footage.

Soon enough, the car pulled up outside on the curb; mother and father took her out, leaving only grandfather and me in the hallway. Mother came in moments later. The house became silent again, and I leaned casually against the wall, making sure I looked completely calm because none of this affected me at all. A few minutes later, the butler arrived with the footage.

“It’s ready, sir.”

“Play it.” The old man said.

The screen lit up, and the camera angle clearly showed the hallway and the staircase. Everyone watched silently as I walked out of the dining room, then, as Summer appeared from the corner and we spoke for a while, suddenly she grabbed my wrist and began to cry. The next moment, she stumbled toward the stairs.

But the most shocking part came next, the footage clearly showed Summer shifting her body before falling, she carefully turned to protect her head and vital body parts. She even reached out slightly to slow the fall. It looked less like an accident and more like a performance.

The room became completely silent; the old man slowly leaned back in his wheelchair, and a long, sad, disappointed sigh escaped.

“I see.” His voice sounded tired. “I truly didn’t expect this.” He closed his eyes for a moment. For years, Summer had fooled them into thinking she was polite, sweet, and always respectful. But now the video showed something different; she had tried to frame her own sister. And she had done it without hesitation.

Mother lowered her head, unable to speak. They had always defended her, but this video left no room for excuses. I remained standing quietly nearby with a calm expression. Almost indifferent, and the old man looked at me.

“Eloise, what do you think of this?” He asked. Was that seriously a question? What was I supposed to think? Funny.

“The truth is already in front of you, you’re the head of the family, and you can decide whatever happens next. I have nothing more to say.” My calm voice fills the hall.

The old man studied me carefully while nodding. “You really know how to stay calm.” There was a hint of approval in his tone.

What was he expecting me to do? To scream? Or cry? The whole thing wasn’t new to me, so I wasn’t moved by it in the least.

“Dad, maybe Summer just made a foolish mistake; she’s still very young.” Her voice sounded weak, and the old man laughed.

“Did you say young? A girl who knows how to set her own sister up? A girl who knows how to take advantage of an injury for sympathy. Or a girl who took your own daughter’s fiancée and still called people to gang rape her?”

“That kind of calculation doesn’t appear overnight.” His voice gree harsher, and his mother lowered her head in embarrassment.

At that moment, Father walked back in with Summer behind him, her head was lowered, and her steps slowed. Her fingers twisted against her sleeve, and her eyes were red from crying.

“Grandpa…” Her voice trembled. “I know I was wrong.”

“What exactly did you do wrong?” The old man looked at her coldly.

“I shouldn’t have framed Eloise, I shouldn’t have pretended I was injured…” hot, fat tears were rolling down her face, and mother looked like she was going to cry as she stepped forward to touch her, but father stopped her.

“Let her finish.”

“I was just scared. You all love Eloise so much, and she’s the real granddaughter of this family.” They love me? This information is news to me. “But I’m the adopted one. I was afraid you would stop loving me. I’ve always treated this family like my real family. Grandpa….please punish me.”
