Everyone turned to look at me, wondering what I had to say next. Summer lifted her head, confusion flashing through her tear- filled eyes. She was probably expecting me to keep antagonizing her. Instead, I spoke quietly.

“Since she already admitted her mistake, maybe we should give her a chance to make up for it.” There was a pin–drop silence at

that moment.

Everybody in the room looked at me like I had grown two heads, like I couldn’t be reasonable at all. Fuck.

I hated this, I wanted to gouge her eyes out with my nails and let her know that she couldn’t walk all over me. I wanted to hit her and pull her hair, but I kept calm and basked in their surprised gazes.

Then i saw Summer’s eyes marrow at me, she clearly didn’t trust my kindness, and she was smart enough for that. Even if I was calm and I really meant it because she was an evil person, she would still think I was out to get her. But I didn’t really care because I was actually out to get her.

Grandfather leaned back in his chair. “What do you suggest?”

His voice went back to carrying authority again.

I met his gaze. “Well, we can’t totally tell, but maybe Summer acted like this because she felt insecure,” my eyes shifted briefly to

her.

“Maybe she thought the family didn’t care about her anymore, which isn’t true because they all love her, even more than they love me, the real daughter of this family.” A hint of bitterness almost made itself known in my voice, but I bit it back. I needed to sound lovely and nice when I said this.

“Maybe we should give her something simple to do. The old mugs in the big study, the ones that haven’t been used because mother doesn’t like to use them as per they are Chinese mugs, yes. The last time I checked them, they were so dirty that I had to leave the place. So I’m sure she can spend the whole day in there, cleaning them and making them sparkle again.”

Mother gasped. That must be too much for her precious daughter. I wanted to laugh because I know how much Summer hated domestic work, but I still found a way to make her do it.

Grandfather raised his hands to silence her. I watched as he thought of things to do. But j knew from the moment I said it that he was going to agree because he didn’t have a choice. He already felt bad, Summer, after the whole performance she put on here, and I knew it would take a lot to make him actually punish her.

I watched as he lost the battle with himself. He wanted to be removed from the situation so badly. I knew it.

“Okay. Let’s do that then.”

“But-” Mother tried to say again, but she was interrupted.

“I don’t want to hear another word from you or your husband. You have already done enough by making her spoiled enough to think about harming her own sister. So I will take it from here,” he said, and his mother kept quiet immediately.

Grandfather nodded with satisfaction. He was obviously happy with the outcome of the situation. “Admitting your mistake is the first step.”
