The small room felt suffocating.

The curtains were drawn tightly, shutting out both light and air, as though the woman inside was afraid of being seen–even by the sun. Amaya stood near the window, her fingers trembling slightly as she held the edge of the curtain. Across from her, Summer paced like a storm trapped in human form.
Her anger had been building for days.
No–years.
And now, it had nowhere else to go.
“Ever since she came back,” Summer snapped, her voice sharp and restless, “everything has been falling apart. She ruined everything.”
Amaya didn’t respond immediately. She had heard this tone before–many times. It always came when Summer felt cornered, when things slipped beyond her control. Still, something about today felt… worse.
Darker.
“She’s turning everyone against me,” Summer continued, her eyes blazing. “Grandfather, Edward, even the servants look at me differently now. Do you know what that feels like?”
Amaya finally spoke, her voice low and strained. You need to calm down.”
But Summer laughed.
A bitter, broken sound.
“Calm down?” she repeated. “You want me to calm down after everything we’ve done to get here?”
That word hung in the air.
We.
Amaya’s chest tightened.

Because she knew exactly what her daughter meant.
If things had gone as planned years ago… none of this would be happening.
If the kidnappers had finished their job that night-
Eloise would have never come back.
And Summer would have never needed to fight for her place in this family.
Amaya closed her eyes briefly, the memory clawing its way back to the surface.

She had not always lived in the shadows.
Once, she had been young. Hopeful. Foolish.

She had worked in the Hawthorne household as a maid, moving quietly through halls filled with wealth she could never touch. Back then, she had believed that hard work would change her life.
Then she met Raymond.
He had been kind to her.
Too kind.
He spoke to her like she mattered, like she wasn invisible. And for someone like Amaya, who had spent her whole life being overlooked, that kind of attention felt like everything. She fell for him.
Completely.
And for a brief, reckless moment, she believed he felt the same. But reality was cruel. Because Raymond was never meant for someone like her. He belonged to Eloise’s mother. A woman of status.
Of class.
Of everything Amaya could never be. When the truth came out, Amaya wasn’t just dismissed. She was thrown out. Humiliated. Erased. And not long after- She found out she was pregnant.

Amaya’s eyes opened slowly.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking for,” she said quietly.
Summer stopped pacing.
“I understand perfectly,” she replied coldly. “I’m asking you to fix what you should have finished years ago.”
The words hit harder than any slap.
Amaya’s hands clenched.
“You think this is easy?” she whispered. “You think I haven’t lived every day afraid of what we did back then?”
Summer stepped closer.
Her voice dropped.
“If that child had disappeared like she was supposed to, we wouldn’t be standing here right now.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Unforgiving.
Amaya looked at her daughter.
Really looked at her.
And for a moment, she didn’t see the little girl she had raised.
She saw something else.
Something shaped by resentment… and fed by it
“You’re asking for something dangerous,” Amaya said again, her voice shaking now. “If anyone finds out-”
“They won’t,” Summer cut in sharply.
Then, without hesitation, she pulled something from her bag and pressed it into Amaya’s hand.

A card.
“Take it,” she said. “And stop hesitating.”
Amaya stared at it but didn’t move.
“I don’t want money,” she said softly.
“I want you safe.”
Summer’s expression hardened.
“Safe?” she echoed. “Were you safe when they threw you out like trash? When they chose her over you?”
Amaya flinched.
“That family ruined your life,” Summer continued. “And now she’s back to ruin mine too. You expect me to just accept that?”
Her grip tightened around Amaya’s hand.
“This is our chance,” she said firmly. “The last one.”
Amaya’s resistance began to crack.
Because deep down…
A part of her still carried that old bitterness.
That old pain.
Slowly, reluctantly, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small vial.
Her hand trembled as she held it out.
“This is the last time,” she said, her voice barely steady. “After this… I won’t help you again.”
Summer snatched it immediately.
Relief and excitement flashed across her face.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “This time, I won’t fail.”
She turned and walked out without looking back
Leaving Amaya standing alone in the dim room

Her chest felt tight.
Her heart heavy.
Because no matter how much she tried to convince herself otherwise…
She knew.
This wouldn’t end well.

Across the city, in a quieter part of town, Eloise stepped out of a small herbal store.
The area was calm, almost forgotten, filled with old buildings and narrow streets that most people avoided. It was the kind of place where secrets could exist without being noticed.
She had come for supplies.
Simple.
Routine.
But something caught her attention.
A figure leaving a nearby villa.
Covered.
Hood low.
Face hidden.
But the way she walked-
Eloise’s eyes narrowed slightly.
That looks familiar.
She didn’t follow.
Not yet.
Instead, she turned back toward the shop counter, her fingers brushing lightly over the jars displayed there.
“Does that woman come here often?” she asked casually.

The old shopkeeper adjusted his glasses.
“Not really,” he replied. “But when she does, she always goes to that villa at the back.”
Eloise nodded slowly.
She didn’t ask anything else.
