As she stepped into the jewelry store, her heartbeat began to race uncontrollably, each step feeling heavier than the last. At first, she told herself she was imagining things. That it wasn’t him. That it couldn’t be him.
But it was.
Edward stood by the counter, his posture relaxed, his attention focused on the woman in front of him. He was holding a necklace, carefully lifting it to her neck, his movements slow and deliberate. The intimacy of it made something sharp twist inside Summer’s chest.
Who is she?
Why is he looking at her like that?
Summer forced herself to keep walking, even though her legs felt weak. By the time she reached them, her face had already arranged itself into a polite smile–but her eyes betrayed her.
“Edward,” she said, her voice soft but strained. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Edward turned, clearly surprised.
“Summer? What are you doing here?” he asked, his brows slightly furrowed.
That simple question cut deeper than it should have.
Summer’s fingers tightened at her side. “Am I not allowed to be here?” she replied, a hint of hurt slipping into her tone.
The woman beside him turned then.
She was beautiful in a way that demanded attention–elegant, confident, and completely at ease. Her gaze moved over Summer briefly before settling back on Edward, calm but curious.
“Are you going to introduce me?” she asked lightly.
Edward hesitated for a second, and that hesitation did not go unnoticed.
Summer’s chest tightened.

“I’m his fiancée,” she said suddenly, her voice rising before she could stop herself.
The air shifted instantly.

The woman’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile, one that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Is that so?” she said calmly. “That’s interesting… especially since he was just helping me pick this out.”
Edward’s expression darkened.
“Summer, stop,” he said firmly.
Then, turning to the woman, he added, “This is summer. Our families are… acquainted.”
Acquainted.
The word echoed painfully in Summer’s mind.
“That’s all?” she asked, her voice trembling now. That’s what I am to you?”
Edward’s patience thinned visibly. “This isn’t the place for this,” he said quietly.
The woman–Ms. Oliviera–gave a soft, amused laugh as she removed the necklace and placed it back on the counter.
“It seems I’ve walked into something personal,” she said. “We can continue this another time.”
As she turned to leave, she paused briefly beside Summer.
“There are some things in life you can’t force,” she said gently, though the meaning behind her words was anything but kind.
Then she walked away, leaving behind a silence that felt suffocating.
Summer stood frozen.
Her hands trembled slightly, and for a moment, she couldn’t even find the words to speak. The humiliation burned hotter than anything she had ever felt before.
“Why are you doing this to me?” she finally asked, her voice breaking. “What did I do wrong?”
Edward rubbed his temple, clearly exhausted.
“Let’s go somewhere else,” he said.
They ended up in a quiet café on the top
floor.

The distance from the crowd did nothing to ease the tension between them. If anything, it made everything sharper, more real.
The moment they sat down, Summer leaned forward.
“Who is she?” she demanded. “And don’t lie to me.”
Edward met her gaze directly.
“She’s a business partner,” he said simply. “That’s all.”
But he didn’t stop there.
“There’s something else we need to talk about,” he added.
Summer’s stomach dropped.
Something in his tone made her uneasy.
“What is it?” she asked cautiously.
Edward took a breath before speaking, as if he had already made up his mind.
“Summer, you need to understand something,” he said. “There was never any engagement between us.”
The words hit her like a physical blow.
“What?” she whispered.
“I’ve always seen you as family,” he continued. “Nothing more.”
Her hands clenched tightly in her lap.
“No… that’s not true,” she said quickly. “You said you would always take care of me. You said
“I meant that as family,” he interrupted calmly. Not as a partner.”
The café suddenly felt too small.
Too tight.
“Then what about Eloise?” she asked, her voice shaking now. “Is it because of her? Because of her position? Her status?”
Edward’s expression hardened.

“My decisions have nothing to do with you,” he said.
That was the moment something inside Summer snapped.
“I don’t want to be your sister!” she cried, her voice louder than she intended.
A few people turned to look.
Edward stood immediately, placing money on the table.
“Let’s go,” he said.
In the empty stairwell, the atmosphere turned cold.

“Look at yourself,” Edward said, his voice sharp. Do you even realize how you’re acting right now?”
Summer froze.
“You’ve never spoken to me like this before,” she said quietly.
Edward exhaled, his tone softening just slightly.
“Go home,” he said. “You need time to think.”
And with that, he walked away.
No hesitation.
No turning back.
Summer stood there long after he left.
Her reflection stared back at her from the glass panel nearby. Her makeup was still perfect. Her appearance untouched.
