Every morning, I make sure I’m the first person he sees. I don’t care how early I have to wake up or how often I even miss my compulsory morning coffee, but I still make sure he sees me each day.
The old man wakes up early, and by the time he wakes up, I’m always in the garden, quiet and composed, as I belong in that space more than anyone. I always greet him with a soft smile, the kind he always liked, the kind that made him believe I was harmless.
It almost makes me laugh at how gullible they are in this family. It was very funny, the only person that had the sense to know I don’t fuck with them waw chased away, and they kept the enemy closer, not that I was complaining.
“Grandpa,” I said softly, guiding him to sit. “I made something for you.”
The tray in my hands looked simple, nothing too fancy. That’s important because if it looks too expensive or complicated, he would start asking questions, and I know him enough to know that he’s like that.
“I woke up early to prepare it. You should have it whole; it’s still warm.” I said.
He looks at it, then at me, and his expression softens at the sight of it.
“You’ve always been thoughtful,” he said gently. No one takes care of me the way you do, which is why I was surprised when I heard the recordings of Eloise that day. I needed to be sure about it because it was so unlike you,” he said shakily. His old age seeping into his voice.
I cleared my throat and pretended to be sober about the situation. “Im so sorry, grandpa. It wasn’t intentional. I was very jealous of Ellie.” I added her nickname to make a point. “Everybody loved her, and she was a smart one.
“But everybody loves you, too, and I’m still at a loss as to why you’re jealous because she was chased out of the house while you were kept here. So where did the jealousy come from?”
This old man and his stupid questions, he should just shut up already. I stopped the urge, actually, to roll my eyes at the situation.
“Grandpa, I’m an orphan. My birth parents are dead, and they left me in this world, where I have no one. But mum and dad showed up and saved me. And I was loved like I was the real daughter. They were there for me, and I remembered the night when mum and dad would cry because they missed their real daughter, and I promised myself that I would make them stop crying and fill the shoes of their lost daughter.” I paused for a needed dramatic effect.

“But then everything changed when Ellie was found again. They doted on her, and it seemed like I was in the background of everything. They stopped calling me princess, and I became a normal daughter. Adopted daughter. I became seared. I got jealous, and I was scared that they would forget me. So I started scheming and making plans. I was jealous, but I didn’t even get to do anything because my conscience wouldn’t let me.” It was a time to add the plot twist.
“And Ellie suddenly started acting weird, bullying me and making my life hell in the house. I guess she was jealous of me, too. She would bully and curse me when mum and dad were not around. And she knew I liked Edward first, but she went for him just to piss me off.” I twisted the story by saying she did the things I did.
“And that was what led to her leaving the house. I didn’t want all those things to happen again, and I guessed I had hidden resentment for her after all the bullying from all those years back, which is why I did what I did. But I was guilty, I was guilty weeks after it happened, and disgusted with myself. I couldn’t believe that I stopped that low and also did it.” I added the last touch as tears welled in my eyes and trickled down my cheeks.
Perfect. I looked into his eyes as I started my fake sob story, and, lo and behold, they looked so tender, like he wanted to wrap me in a tight hug. Like I said, stupid and foolish.
They didn’t have the sense of discernment, but who could really blame them? I was a perfect actress. I sniffed.
“Oh, sweetheart, you must have been through a lot. And I know you’re not lying because of the energy you have put in actually getting it right and serving your punishments diligently. I commend you for that. And you don’t have to be jealous of your sister, you guys are blood at this point, and you have a loving family. Have you seen how protective your brothers are of you? They will literally burn the world down if you’re hurt. I need you to wise up and start being a good person because this family loves you a lot, and so do I,” he said and stretched his hand toward me.
I nodded my head, tears still falling down my cheeks, and he squeezed my hand.
“Now, cry no more, child. Your sins have been forgiven, and it’s time for you to forge new memories, okay? Leave the past where it belongs. And don’t forget to be good to your sister,” he said, and I almost scoffed through tears.
I nodded, and we stayed in silence for the rest of his morning in the garden. They were so stupid.
I keep repeating it, and I wondered how stupid they were. I knew they weren’t good people because if they were, they wouldn’t have treated Eloise that badly because of me. I knew that their pride would not let them apologise to her and treat her right. They couldn’t bear to look into her eyes and make it up to her, and that’s why they were doomed.
