Chapter 22 The Intense Phone Call

I was about to turn my phone off; I was tired of seeing both the nasty comments from Summer’s fans and the ones praising me. My head was spinning, and I just wanted to crawl under my covers and disappear.

But then, the phone vibrated in my hand.

My heart nearly leaped out of my chest when I saw the caller’s ID. There was no name, but I knew the number; I had memorized it without even realizing.

It was Damon.

I froze, my breath hitched, and a wave of goosebumps broke out across my skin. Why was he calling me? We weren’t supposed to be in contact during the trials.

My heart hammered against my chest like a trapped bird.

With trembling fingers, I swiped to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Hello?” I whispered. My voice sounded small, even to my own ears.

“I almost thought you weren’t going to pick up,” a deep voice rumbled on the other end.

The sound of his voice hit me like a physical weight. It was low, smooth, and dangerous. I felt a sudden, sharp heat coil in my lower stomach. Without thinking, I clenched my thighs together, a small gasp escaping my lips. He sounded so good, too good.

“…I was about to turn it off.” I said, my voice shaking.

I heard a low, dark chuckle that made my toes curl, and there was a brief silence on the line, the kind of silence that felt heavy with tension. I could hear his breath, and it made my own breath turn shallow.

“Why did you call, Damon?” I asked, trying to find my courage.

“I wanted to check up on my doctor,” he said. The way he said my doctor made my heart skip a beat. It felt possessive, as if he were marking me with his words. “I wanted to see if you needed anything. Food…clothes…protection.”

I felt a rush of warmth. Nobody had ever asked me that before. In the rogue camps, you took what you needed, or you would lack. No one cared if I was okay, but he did. I felt butterflies fluttering wildly in my stomach. Even my family didn’t care about me.

I lay back in my bed, curling my body into a small ball, hugging my knees to my chest. I didn’t even realise I was doing it–the universal sign of a girl who was falling hard.

“I’m okay,” I whispered, a small smile tugging at my lips. “The Elder is taking care of us. What about you? Are you okay?”

“Better now that I know you’re well.” He muttered, and I heard him shift; then a soft, frustrated sound came from his throat. “Ive been busy, I found an estate today–a large piece of land on the edge of the territory. I’m thinking of buying the whole place out.

“An estate?” I asked, trying to focus on the conversation despite the way my heart was racing. “Is it beautiful?”

“It’s private.” He said, his voice dropping an octave. “Quiet. Plenty of room for someone to run, I think you’d like the gardens.”

We fell into a comfortable silence. It wasn’t awkward. It was like we were both just soaking in the fact that we were talking. I bit my lip, gathering my nerve to ask the question that has been on my mind.

“Damon?”

“Hmmm?” Gosh….he sounded so sexy.

“How are your eyes?” I asked softly.

He was silent for a long moment. I held my breath, wondering if I had overstepped. Then I heard him exhale a long, shaky breath.

“My eyes are fine, Eloise.” He rasped. “But they’re hungry. They miss seeing a certain pair of eyes looking back at them.”
