Every day at the Luna Trials has been so exhausting, and all I wanted to do was lie down on the bed at the hotel that Damon bought out for us. Being under the constant gaze of that fucking drone was draining. I felt like a bird in a cage, but I knew I had to stay strong.
I had enemies to destroy, and winning this was only the starting point. Suddenly, the door to our shared living room creaked open, and the Elder walked in, looking strangely pale and shaky.
In his hands was a massive gift basket, overflowing with expensive chocolates, imported fruits, luxury skincare, and even warm meals that smelled like heaven.
Oh, Lard, please let this be for everyone. Low–key, I was tired of eating food roasted over the fire. I’d missed the kind of dishes I used to eat, and seeing this, the morning was about to turn out great.
Every girl in the room stopped what they was doing to concentrate,
“Eloise,” the Elder said in a trembling voice.
“This is for you.”
“For me?” I asked, pointing to myself, because I was shocked.
The Elder didn’t answer; he just stepped back. I walked over, feeling the jealous stares of the other girls. “Who sent it?” I asked the Elder, but he just stood there, staring at the ground as if something was interesting on it.
Tucked into the other parts of the basket was a small envelope. I opened it, and my heart skipped a beat as I read the short, bold handwriting.
“Eat and stay healthy, ma. Watching you through the eyes you called beautiful.”
He didn’t even need to put a name before I knew who it was, Damon.
What was he doing? Why was he sending me stuff like this when he knew it would cause a stir among the contestants and the pack people? I didn’t want to seem like I was being prioritised over the rest of the contestants.
Fuck, but low key, I liked it. But I shouldn’t, so I shook the thought out of my head.
“What is all that?” Summer snapped, walking over with her arms crossed, her face twisted in an ugly scowl. “We aren’t allowed to have outside contacts or gifts. This is cheating.”
The other girls started whispering with faces filled with envy.
“Elder, how is this allowed?” one of the girls asked.
“Because you stated on our first day that things like this wouldn’t happen, so why is she the exception?” another one added.
This is precisely what I didn’t want to happen, and for some reason, I think Damon did this intentionally.
The Elder cleared his throat to talk. “Um…I have no say in this matter. I’m sorry, but it’s the higher authorities,” he said, and I sighed. I slipped the black envelope into my back pocket, where I knew it was safe,

Summer looked like she was about to explode, though. She was used to being the center of attention, the one with all the money and the power; seeing me get special treatment that was from the higher authorities must be eating her alive.
I looked at the mountain of food, and it was way more than I could eat alone. I knew what I had to do; if I wanted to survive these trials, I needed allies, not enemies.
“Theres plenty of food,” I said to the other girls. “I can’t finish this all by myself. Why don’t we all share?”
The tension in the room broke instantly. The girls who had been eating bland and basic meals during their stay at the maiden house rushed forward with smiles.
You’d think they weren’t just pissed that I had received “special treatment” seconds ago.
“Really, Eloise?”
“Yes, please, go ahead,” I said, stretching my hand towards the basket of food.
“This chocolate looks so amazing.”
I handed out the fruits and meals, allowing Lex to take whatever she wanted, because she was the only one we had been talking to since we arrived, and she was the closest thing I could call a friend.
1 watched as the girls‘ attitude shifted from jealousy to gratitude. Only Summer stayed in the corner, fuming in silence; she didn’t take a single bite, but I didn’t care. Let her feed on her pride.
The Elder waited until we had finished our impromptu feast before he clapped his hands. “Gather around,” he commanded, his voice returning to its normal stern tone. “It is time to announce the task for this morning, and I suggest you prepare yourself because it won’t be easy.”
“But before I do that, I have news that might excite you. So, I received an order yesterday, and you guys are now allowed to use your phones overnight.” Cheers went through the living room, and there was a smile on everyone’s face. I was stiff, though, cause it wasn’t like I had someone who wanted to talk to me.
“So the moment we get back from today’s task, you will be given your phone, and it will be collected in the morning. Now that I’ve announced that, moving on to today’s task.”
We all listened intently to what it would be.
“Today, your task is to prove your ability to provide and handle the pressures of the market. Where the commoners stay,” the Elder explained. “The task is quite simple: Selling roasted chicken. However, you will not be given the meat; you will start from the very beginning. You must catch the chicken, kill it, pluck the feathers, clean it, roast it, and sell it in the village market. The first person to sell their chickens and return with the most profit only has half the mark,” he said, pausing slightly.
“What more could there be?” one of the girls stated.
“The contestant that has the most votes from the customers, plus the most profit, wins. So this trial is testing your communication skills, the way you relate with people, and your marketing skills,” the Elder said.
A collective gasp went through the room; these were daughters of wealthy families and noble bloodlines. Most of them had never seen a raw chicken before in their lives.
“Thats disgusting.” Summer cried out, “I don’t kill things,” she said.
“Then you don’t belong in the Luna Trials.” The Elder replied coldly.
