The camera’s flashing lights were almost blinding. I was still getting used to publicity like this. I sighed as I stepped onto the red carpet, the fabric of my gown dragging silently against the floor. The dress was in my room this evening after I got back from a jog. I knew it was from Damon, and he had good taste.

A reporter almost thrust a microphone into my mouth, her eyes gleaming with hunger for the best story. “Eloise! The rumors said. you treated a dying guard during the trials. How did you do it? And how did you find yourself participating in the contest?” the reporter asked me.

I paused, offering a poised and practiced smile.

“It’s easy. Saving lives has become a new thing for me recently. I saw that he needed help, and I immediately knew what to do. As for how I found myself participating in the contest, I don’t know either. It just happened.” I replied, making sure I didn’t talk too much or leave out too much information.

I didn”t wait for her to say something else; I kept moving. My heart was hammering against my ribs brutally, and it had nothing to de with the cameras and everything to do with the fact that I knew what was going to go down tonight.

The field was massive, a circular stone structure that hummed with the energy of thousands of wolves. I found my way to the contestants‘ section, where the seats were arranged in circles. I had to find a familiar face. Luckily, I saw Lex and started heading over to the empty chair beside her.

“You look incredible,” Lex said the moment I got within hearing distance. She reached out and squeezed my hand the moment I sat down. “The whole party is talking about you. You really did a good job during the contest. I went back to watch the show on TV myself.” Lex said with a smile.

“Oh yeah? People do that? Is that not like a waste of time?” I asked her because I was genuinely curious, and I would not do that.

“No, it’s so fun seeing myself on TV. And then watching all the stressful things we had to go through. And there was you, when you saved that guard. The moment was magical, Eloise. Really magical.” Lex said, and I smiled slightly.

“Im just glad he survived, I guess it’s an instinct that I have now,” I replied softly, though my eyes were scanning everywhere but I knew he wasn’t around because I would see if he was around. I would feel him, but I haven’t.

Then suddenly, the air in the field changed. It suddenly turned cloudy and dark, as if rain were about to fall. And I just knew it, a slight smirk pulled at my lips.

The voice of the programme handler rang out. “All rise for the Lycan King.”

The sound was like a physical wave. In unison, thousands of people stood and dropped to one knee, heads bowed in absolute submission. I followed suit, my knees hitting the floor. I didn’t need to see him to feel him. The sheer weight of his presence moved through the fields like a breeze. The silence was deafening, broken by only the steady, rhythmic sound of his boots against the floor.

The moment he was seated, the Elder, a man whose face was etched with the history of our kind. He was the one who had been in charge of the contest from the beginning. I wasn’t sure if I liked him or not, but I guess I’ll know as time goes on.

I didn’t know if he was aware of whatever Summer did that night, or if he was one of their allies.

“The Luna Trial of this season has been a battle of wills and wisdom. It was fun, and there were bonds that I believe would never be

broken. We have seen many displays of strength this season,” the Elder began, his voice low but powerful. “We have seen cunning, we have seen blood. But we have also seen something rare, we have seen the power of life being returned to those the Goddess had almost claimed.”

He looked towards our section, and my breath hitched.

“One contestant did not just survive the challenges; she mastered them. When a guard lay dying, his life spilling into the dirt, she didn’t look away. She healed him. She showed us that a Queen must not only know how to kill for her pack, but how to keep them alive”

The crowd began to murmur, a low growl of approval.

“And that person is no other than Eloise Lockwood. Step forward!”

The applause was thunderous. I stood, my legs feeling like lead, and I walked to the stage. The applause did not stop; it only increased as I made my way to the stage. It wasn’t the applause that made me almost trip; it wasn’t the crowd that did. It was one person, one eye behind those black shades.

But because his stare made me more powerful, I didn’t trip. Instead, I walked with my head raised high.

The Elder handed me a small, golden award that looked like the statue of a goddess.

“A few words, child?”

I smiled and took the microphone politely, looking at the sea of faces.

“I was referred to as a rogue most of my life,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “A rogue,” I laughed into the microphone. “Thats quite funny, right? Because I was born in this pack, but it was quite unfortunate that I was kidnapped at a very young age by the rogues. And while I was with them, I was shown that the world isn’t all about roses and happiness. Some of the rogues were kind to me, while others were brutal. Apparently, they were training soldiers for a war that is supposed to happen in the future.”

“Ever since I got back to this pack, I’ve been tagged a rogue, and for some weird reason, I wore the title with pride. Being a rogue isn’t easy. It’s hard; you have to survive in the wilderness, and you have to be a resourceful woman or man. You have to know your way around the wilderness, and it’s always kill or be killed. Always watch your back because you never know when your time will be up. The rogues helped me develop a sense of awareness. I learned a lot that I owe to them.”

“So, I don’t want to waste a lot of time with these words, I’m just going to say this. Giving a particular set of people a name because of their situation isn’t ideal. We are all wolves; there’s no difference. We should be together, fighting against people who are dangerous to us, not the other way around. Anyway, I know we can do this; we can make this work if we put our minds to it, which is why I’m dedicating this award to all the wolves who have been looked down on, to the omegas, and to the rogues. Keep being yourself and don’t let anyone step on you. Thank you.” I said and returned the microphone to the Elder.

“A round of applause to our winner for that amazing speech,” the Elder said, and people were already clapping before he finished.

“Now, to the final and the most important event of the evening. Your Majesty, over to you,” the Elder said.

I had already taken my seat when he left the stage for Damon to do his thing.

Damon stood up without saying a word; he didn’t need to.

A sudden, sharp breeze swept through the arena, filled with the scent of ozone and ancient power. And then, he moved.
