It had been two days since the award ceremony–the day I was publicly claimed as Queen and Damon’s wolf, Tyrone, nearly ripped Summer’s throat out.
I thought we were headed back to the obsidian hotel after the drama, but Damon had other plans.
“Let’s go home, mama,” he had said, and for the first time since we met each other, home didn’t mean a penthouse in the obsidian hotel.
He had driven us to the outskirts of the city, where a massive estate sat behind iron gates. It wasn’t just a house; it was a palace. Damon had apparently been building it in secret, waiting for the right moment to move in. It was so beautiful, all marble and glass, and to my surprise, he told me I had an entire wing of the house all to myself.
“You’ll have your privacy here,” he had told me while showing me the master suite in my wing. Then, with a smirk that made my stomach do backflips, he added, “Though I don’t expect you’ll be sleeping in this wing for long once the wedding is over.”
In fact, my cheeks go red, a deep blush spreading across my chest. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Get a grip, Eloise. I scolded myself. This is a business arrangement. He’s supposed to destroy your enemies. Don’t go falling for the big bad wolf just because he says things that make the butterflies in your tummy come alive.
Tonight, the business continued, the arrangement.
Damon had brought me to the Blackclaw club again. His exclusive club in the pack, he said, there were people I needed to meet, to investors and high–ranking Alphas who needed to see their future Queen in the flesh.
Damon had been called away for a series of urgent “kingly” phone calls, leaving me at the VIP bar. I was sipping on sparkling water because I hated alcohol. I was trying to look like I belonged in this place, even though one chandelier looked like it cost more than my life.
While I was thinking that, a shadow fell over me.
“Im sorry, I’m waiting for someone,” I said politely, not even looking up. I didn’t want someone else to sit on the other side of the
table.
“Eloise? Are you actually here? This is perfect, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
My blood ran cold at the sound of that voice.
I looked up, and my stomach turned.
Standing there and looking far too smug for his own good was Edward.
My ex.
The man who had tossed me aside like yesterday’s trash.
I set my glass down, my gaze turning into ice.
“Edward, please leave. I don’t want to see you.”

Edward ignored me, stepping closer into my personal space. He looked haggard, regardless of his expensive suit. Rumor had it that he wasn’t doing really well since Damon took over the pack. Business was tanking, and everybody was abandoning him, including Summer.
“Eloise, I know you’re still hurting, I know you’re angry, which you have every right to be. But just give me five minutes, five minutes to explain everything, okay?”
He sounded desperate, almost pleading. I knew why, without a string connection or a wealthy mate, Edward was nothing. He needed me now that I was someone, but I guess the death of his father wasn’t making it any easier for him.
But that’s quite unfortunate for him.
“Theres nothing to explain,” I said, my voice steady and cold. “We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Please stop bothering me.”
I stood up and turned ti walk away, but Edward reached and snatched my wrist, his grip tight and bruising.
“Let go of me!” I snapped.
“Eloiss! I’m your fiancée. How can you be so heartless?” Edward demanded, his eyes flashing with frustration. “You’re really going to throw away everything we had for some King that could abandon you any time?”
I let out a dry and harsh laugh.
“We broke off our engagement the second you chose Summer. You two are a perfect match, both delusional and selfish. You should stay with her. Plus, the King is more of a man than you will ever be.”
“You misunderstood everything.” Edward insisted, his fingers digging into my skin. “Summer means nothing to me, she was just a distraction…a sisterly figure.”
“A sisterly figure that you slept with?” I arched an eyebrow. “How touching.”
“It wasn’t like that!” he growled, shaking my arm.
“I believe the lady told you to let her go.” If Edward knew what was good for him, he would let me go because the moment Tyrone comes out, he’s coming for the kill.
Edward’s grip vanished immediately. He turned around, his face turning pale as a sheet.
“Your Majesty? I didn’t see you there.” Damon stepped out of the shaded part of the bar. His presence dwarfs him in every possible way. He didn’t look like the man who had been teasing me about our bedroom arrangements a few days before.
“Edward, isn’t it?” he said in a smooth voice. “Harrasing my Queen in a public place? You must have a lot of nerve.”
“Or maybe you’re just stupid,” he added.
Edward fumbled with his tie, sweating profusely.
“Your Majesty. You’ve gotten it all wrong, Eloise and I were just catching up, right, Eloise?”
He looked at me with pleading eyes for me to save him. Damon’s turned to me, his expression softening instantly.
“Do you need me to handle this, ma?” he asked quietly.
