I couldn’t do many things in the hour that Damon promised. It was midnight already, and my Aunt Laura had been trying to get me to sleep, but I couldn’t because I was trying to calm my nerves.

After the call with Damon, I spent twenty minutes with my Aunt, and I went outside to try to breathe in the fresh air. After I was satisfied and the hour was up, I went back to Aunt Laura’s room. I wanted to see her one last time before th madness started.

But of course, the vultures were there already: my father, Julian, Antoine, my mother, and Summer were crowded around her bed, their voices loud and mean.

“Laura, stop being a fool.” Billy snapped. “Eloise is playing with your life. She found a fake doctor to act like a doctor ghost. Tell her to sign over the shares so that we can bring in a real professional who can do this surgery without complications.”

“No,” Laura whispered. She sounded so weak that it broke my heart. I don’t understand how these idiots didn’t think that their voices would cause her a headache. But they were too selfish even to think that. “I trust her,” she added.

I stepped into the room, my boots clicking loudly on the floor.

“Get away from her, you vultures,” I said in a cold voice.

“Dont you dare talk to us like that,” my mother said, and I raised an eyebrow.

“And what will you do if I do? You think you scare me? I don’t give two flying fucks about you or any other person in this room except Aunt Laura. All of you are selfish till the end. She is sick, and you’re all around, bugging her about money. How foolish can you all be?”

Julian laughed. “So, Miss Runaway is back. Tell us, Eloise. Where is Doctor Ghost? Did he disappear into thin air like your common

sense?”

“The tunornis touching her nerves, you idiot,” Antoine added, crossing his arms. “No normal doctor can fix that, you’re basically killing her yourself.”

I ignored them and walked to the bed. I took Laura’s hand and looked into her eyes.

“Aunt Laura, don’t listen to anything they have to say. Just ignore them and tune them out. It’s time, everything is ready.”

She looked at me with so much love it hurt. “Im not scared, Eloiss. I believe in you.” I smiled, relieved that she trusted me.

“Believe?” Billy barked. “You’re betting your life on a girl who has an alliance with the rogues? Our rivals? You’re going to die on that table, Laura.”

“Thats enough,” Laura shouted, her voice cracking.

“Easy, aunty,” I said and squeezed her hands.

“It’s my life, and you have no say. I’d rather die trusting Eloise than live another day longer being used by you devilish people.”

Just then, the door swung open.

The air in the room suddenly felt heavy, and everyone froze in place.

Damon walked in.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored suit that made him look even more dangerous. His eyes swept over my family like they were nothing but dirt on his shoe. They all bowed in respect to him. Behind him, four doctors followed, looking terrified.

“Hey, ma,” he said and walked over to me. Kissing me on the forehead and then on the corner of my lips. “How are you?” he asked.

“Im okay. This is my Aunt Laura.” I stretched my hand to her, and he nodded with a smile.

“Hi, Laura. My name is Damon. I’m your niece’s husband. It’s nice to meet you finally,” he said with a smile on his face.

“Likewise, Your Majesty,” Laura said.

Damon turned back to me, smoothing my hair down. “The operating room is ready, ma.” his voice was so deep, and it commanded respect. “We can start now, Eloise.”

My father and brother didn’t dare speak a word. They all froze up like they had seen a ghost. Of course, they didn’t have anything to say; they were cowards in the face of power and knew that Damon would not hesitate to hang their heads on a pike if they said anything that rubbed him the wrong way.

Nurses rushed in and began to wheel Laura’s bed out. I followed them, but Antoine tried to grab my arm.

“Where are you going?” Antoine hissed. “Are you running away because you’re scared she’s going to die?”

“You have 0 seconds to take your hands off my wife. Do you have a death wish?” Damon’s voice said from behind me and Antoine immediately dropped his arm and bowed.

“Shut your mouth and get lost. Before I shut it for you.” I said it and walked out, leaving them standing in shock.

“Hey ma,” Damon’s voice called, and I stopped. He reached for my hands. “Dont be nervous, you can do this. You’ve been doing this for the last two months, and you’ve been coming out on top each time.”

“But I don’t think I’ve done anyone this dangerous.”

“Dont worry, there’s more to you than the ordinary eyes can see. And I know something is helping you. All those tranches you get into, it’s supernatural. I can feel it each time, so I know you have the help of someone who’s not ordinary in there. So go there and break legs, ma,” he said, and a strange feeling of deja vu washed over me.

That was the same thing Tamia told me in the trance I went into earlier. But I shrugged it off.

“Okay,” I said.

He leaned down and kissed my lips, waiting a little bit too long before pulling back.

“I’ll see you later,” he said and walked off. Leaving me in shambles.

I was still getting used to these sudden acts of care from him, such as kissing me or holding my hands, even in public. I felt good about everything he did, and that feeling followed me into the operating room.

1 scrubbed my hands until they were red and stepped into the room. Aunt Laura was lying on the surgery table, and she was shaking, her eyes wide with fear as machines beeped around her. I walked over to her as the nurses were getting the anesthesia ready. I leaned down, my face close to hers.
