The moment the calepel touched my hand, everything around me faded away. The beeping machines, the heavy–breathing nurses, and even my own fear vanished. I closed my eyes for a second, and that familiar feeling washed through me. It was a cold wave of peace, and it felt very familiar
The traces I’ve been getting into anytime I’m with Damon, or anytime I want to prescribe someone, that is how this feels right now. This was the trance; I’ve also been going into trances for the past two months anytime I was treating people, and this wasn’t new. My wolf wasn’t just a beast inside me; she was also a partner. As I stood there, a golden light seemed to fill my mind.
Like it had been doing for the past two months, it was like a movie screen flickered on behind my eyelids. I could see the surgery before I even did it. A step–by–step video played in my head, telling me where precisely to cut, which blood vessels to avoid and how to peel the tumour away from the sensitive werewolf nerves. I opened my eyes, and I wasn’t just myself anymore. I felt the additional power that had come over me.
“Drill,” I said. My voice firmer and steadier. I almost didn’t recognise my voice.
The nurses jumped in to obey. For the next six hours, I didn’t get tired, I didn’t feel hungry, and my hands were steady as a mountain. This surgery was more complicated because Aunt Laura was a wolf. I know that the biology of being a wolf is different from that of a human, and the tumour needed to be removed quickly. The tumour was wrapped around her nerves like a poisonous vine; any regular doctor would have nicked a nerve and paralysed her.
But I could see the faint glow of her life force. I moved the blade with supernatural speed. In the observation room above, I could see the shadows of doctors watching me. They were probably lowering their minds right now.
“Clamp,” I muttered and used it, then dropped it. “Suction.”
The tumour was stubborn; it had built its house in Aunt Laura’s nerves, probably, and maybe if I weren’t in some sort of spiritual trance now, I would be scared because seeing it alone scared me.
The tumour was strong, but I was stronger. Every time I hit a difficult spot, it felt like the video in my head zoomed in, always showing me the way. It was like an ancient healer was guiding my hands.
When I finally pulled the last piece of the mass out, I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years.
“It’s out,” I whispered.
1 didn’t let the assistants finish the stitches. Aunt Laura deserved the best, plus I didn’t want to hear any story if the Nurses fuck it up. So it’s better to do everything myself and hope that everything works out. I used a special technique, stitching the wound so perfectly it looked like art. By the time I was done, her heart rate was strong and steady.
“Operation complete,” I announced. “The tumour is gone, and there is no damage to the nerves either.”
The gallery above erupted, along with the nurses and doctors in the surgery room. I could hear them clapping through the glass, calling me a miracle worker. Saying this surgery will be in the history books because of how complicated it should have been. But! really didn’t care about all that; I just cared that she was alive.
I cleaned up, changed into my regular clothes and walked out. I made sure that nobody could see me. Plus, Damon already arranged a room within the entire surgery department where I could change without anyone’s intervention.
Once the sliding doors opened. I saw my “family” pacing back and forth like hungry dogs. My father looked like he was sucking on a

lemon. Antoine and Julian were whispering, probably planning ways to take her money if she died, since that was all they knew how to do, and Summer and my mother just sat somewhere, lost in their thoughts.
“It’s been six hours,” Antoine snapped when he saw me. “Is she dead? Did you finally kill her, Eloise?”
“And I’m sure you’d be happy to hear that she’s dead, but unfortunately for you, the surgery went well, and she’s alive and doing fine,” I said in a cold voice.
Just then, the head doctor walked out, looking amazed. “My Queen,” he greeted when he sighted me. “The Lockwoods, well, I’m glad to inform you that the surgery was a success. It was incredible. Dr Ghost is a genius! The tumour is completely gone, and the patient is stable.”
My father’s face turned pale. “What? That’s impossible! Who was the doctor, and where is he?”
I stepped forward, a small and mean smile gracing my face. “Dr Ghost already left. He doesn’t like dealing with vultures. Sorry to disappoint you all, but Aunt Laura is going to live a long, healthy life. Your little plan to steal her shares just went up in smoke, and the plan to force my hand into signing, too? I think you guys need to do better at scheming.”
Julian stepped forward, his face filled with rage. “You’re lying, you or your baby paid that director to lie for you.”
“Believe what you want.” I shrugged. “But the monitors don’t lie. Go and see for yourself, I’m sorry to disappoint you all.” I said with a laugh and watched as they all pushed past me, rushing through the ICU window. They all looked like idiots, staring at Laura’s peaceful, sleeping face. They realised then that they had no more leverage. They couldn’t use her sickness to bully her anymore.
Damon stepped out of the VIP waiting room in the hallway. He had been waiting for me the whole time. He didn’t say anything at first; he just wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close to his warm body, and his scent calmed the last of my jitters.
“You did well, ma,” he whispered against my hair.
