“Language, ma.”
I didn’t even have to turn around to know it was Damon; his voice was like a low rumble of thunder. He felt his presence behind him before I felt his hand on my shoulder. He stepped beside me, making Edward’s frame look like a small, insignificant boy in comparison.
Damon reached out, his fingers grazing my cheek as he tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was so gentle, a stark contrast to the fury I saw dancing in his eyes when he saw Edward.
“Ive told you about those curse words, ma,” he murmured to me, even though his gaze never left Edward. He looked like a predator deciding which part of the limb of his prey he would feast on. “Do you want me to handle this, Eloise? Just say the word, and he won’t be a problem. I saw Edward’s face turn a sick shade of grey. He knew who Damon was and what he could do.
“No,” I said, placing a hand on Damon’s chest to keep him anchored because I knew that if Edward did too much, Tyrone would come out and probably tear him to pieces with a smile on his face. I could feel his heart beating steadily, a rhythmic power beneath his expensive shirt. “Dont handle it, Damon. There are families and children here. I don’t want any blood on these floors today. Not today.”
Damon’s jaw tightened, his muscles rippling. He clearly wanted to tear Edward apart, but he nodded slowly, respecting my wish. He stayed right there, though his hands sliding around my waist to pull me close to his side. He was marking his territory, and for the first time in my life, I didn’t mind being claimed.
It felt powerful.
Edward found his voice, though it was shaky. “Eloise…please, I k–know I made a…mistake. That day… that you needed me… I was just….”
He cleared his throat before he continued. “I just wasn’t thinking clearly.”
I felt a pang of the hurt that came from the past, but it was quickly replaced by disgust. I remembered that day and other days. Days that I’ve been at my lowest, needing a shoulder to lean on, and he would literally walk out on me because Summer would have called him with one excuse or the other. There was a time when I was stuck in the rain, expecting Edward to show up. It was a joke on me because by the time I got home, he was setting up the fireplace for Summer.
Such a joke, I thought, and almost laughed out loud.
“You weren’t thinking? I asked. “No, Edward. You were thinking perfectly fine. You were thinking about who the favourite child was and about your own status. You chose the wrong sister, and now you’re realising that the one you threw away turned out to be the one you actually needed.”
“I really love you, Eloise,” he stammered.
I felt Damon’s hand tighten around my waist, and I leaned into his touch to make him feel better. In fact, I could tell that he wasn’t comfortable sitting all through this. I guess it had to happen.
I laughed, and it felt good. It felt like a weight was being lifted off my body. “You make me sick, you don’t love me. You love the fact that I’m standing next to a king. You’re a social climber, Edward. And honestly? It’s not a good look on you. You can do better and be better. We are done; there is no ‘us‘ again moving forward. There is only you, being pathetic.”

“Edward!”

A high–pitched, sugary voice echoed down the hall, and we all turned to see Summer hurrying towards us. She looked perfectly polished as usual. But the moment she saw me standing with Damon, her eyes flashed with pure jealousy. She immediately latched on to Edward’s arm, hugging it to her chest.
“How can you speak to him like that, Eloise?” Summer asked, her lip trembling as if she were the one being bullied. He’s been so worried about you. He’s such a good man, and you’re just being so cruel unnecessarily.”
I looked at her, then at Edward, then back at her. Th two of them deserved each other. I’m just seeing it now; they had the same disgusting thought process.
“Cruel?” I raised an eyebrow. “Summer, you’ve always wanted what was mine. From my clothes to my father’s attention, and finally, my ex–fiancée. Well, congratulations, girl. You got him. Good riddance to the bad rubbish of both of you.”
I looked Edward up and down with a look of pure boredom.
“Im not a trash can, Summer. I don’t recycle garbage. The man I decided I’m done with, you picked him up like he was some kind of prize. If you want to parade your little treasure around, you can go ahead. But don’t do it in front of me, I don’t like the smell of rotting waste.”
Summer’s face went white. She looked like she had been slapped, and I live for moments like this. “You… you’re so arrogant now!”
“Well, look at that. I learned from the best.” I said with a smile.
She looked at Edward, then back at me, and suddenly she let out a small gasp. She clutched her stomach, leaning heavily against Edward.
“Oh…Edward…my stomach,” she whispered, her voice turning into a faint whisper. “I feel so faint, I think the stress of this hospital is getting to me.”
I leaned against Damon with amusement on my face, watching this little performance with a smile. It was the same old trick. Whenever Summer wasn’t the centre of attention or whenever she was losing an argument, she suddenly became sick.
Edward immediately went into panic mode. The same old fucking reaction. “Summer? What’s wrong? Are you okay?” he looked at me almost accusingly. “See? She’s sensitive, she’s not tough like you, Eloise.”
“She is not sick, Edward. She’s an actress.” I said in a flat voice. “And you’re a fool, a very stupid one at that. Suppose she was really in pain. Good news. You’re in a hospital where you can get checked out, or I can tell Damon to call the specialists or even the pack’s healers for you. Or we could find a surgical team that would open her up and see if her conscience is still there. Because I’m sure that’s the only thing I’m missing.”
Summer’s eyes snapped open for a second, glaring at me before she went back to not feeling well.
“1-1 think I just need to sit down,” Summer said, suddenly standing a bit straighter when she realised I wasn’t buying it.
I stepped closer to Edward, ignoring Summer’s fake whimpers. I leaned in, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
“You should leave, Edward. Right now. You’re lucky I am a woman of my word. I told Damon to stay back, but look at him.” I tilted my head towards Damon. Who was watching Edward like a wolf watches a rabbit. “If I hadn’t stopped him, your head would be rolling down this hallway by now. He doesn’t care about hospital rules or public opinion; he only cares about me. Now, when I have a man like that, why will I go back to you?”
