Chapter 74 The King Tone

I adjusted the dark shades covering my eyes. To the world, they were a fashion statement, ‘cause I wore different designer shades every day, they thought it was a sign of my detached arrogance. In reality, they were a shield.

I knew everybody was aware of the colour of my eyes; tales were being whispered about it to children as folktales–the monster with two coloured eyes. But I didn’t care. The one person I didn’t want to be scared of me wasn’t, and that was all I needed.

As I approached the massive doors that led to my throne room, I heard whispers from within, and I signalled to my guards not to announce me. I wanted to listen to what they had to say behind my back, even though I was sure that none of them were good things.

“It’s a pity really.” I recognized the voice; it was Jabari’s uncle. He had been playing the role of a grieving, loyal Elder, but his scent always reeked of bitterness.

“To have a king so young and powerful, yet stuck in a body that’s failing him. Living like that must be pure torture.”

I paused for a minute. How did they know I was sick?

“Is that why he always wears those shades? Unheard, the sickness has reached his brain. They say he’s going blind or worse–that his demon side is finally showing its face. A king who can’t look his subject in the eyes is no King at all,” another Elder chimed in, and I smiled.

Are we about to do this? I asked myself.

Hell yeah. Tyrone replied to me.

“Let’s do it,” I said and heard another Elder about to say something, but I signalled to the guards to open the door, and they did. The sound vibrated through the walls of the great throne room.

The moment they all saw me, they bowed, and I laughed, in a wicked way, because i was about to show them the reason the tales whispered about me.

“Dont do that, guys. You don’t have to look down. I thought someone was saying something about…” I did as if I was thinking. “What was that again?” I took another dramatic pause before I clicked my fingers.

“Oh yes, I got it now. Someone was saying a King who can’t look his subject in the eye is no King at all. Am I right?” I asked, but! was met with absolute silence.

And that annoyed me.

“I said, am. I. Right?” I asked them again, and some of them shook their heads in fear.

“Well, we are about to change that now. All of you, head up.” I commanded. Removing the shades from my face.

“Your Majesty, we do not dare to look you in the face,” one of them said while trembling, and I laughed.

“No, it’s okay. I want you all to look me in my eyes. Since a King who can’t look his subject in the eye is no King at all, i want to show you that I can. Now raise your fucking useless heads.” I said, but they all trembled as they continued looking down.

“1. Said. Look. At. My. Eyes.”

Lused my King tone, the one they could not refuse. They all looked up at me slowly; it was a royal command, and they didn’t dare disobey.

“Yeah, that’s right. Look at my fucking eyes,” I said to all of them as they all trembled, I heard someone falling, and I looked in the direction to see one of the Elders on the floor, and I heard some of them even piss on themselves.

Fucking cowards.

They were all trembling and breathing like they had just run a few marathons.

Another person fell, and I wasn’t sure if he fainted or not, or maybe he was dead. Suppose he was, good riddance to bad rubbish. I didn’t need idiots in my cabinet. Perhaps it was time for a cleanse. It was time to remove the cowards from my cabinet and bring in people who were more capable.
