Chapter 9 Just The Beginning

ELOISE’s POV.

A low buzzing sound quickly replaced the silence in the room as people started to realise who I was.

“Is that…Eloise Lockwood?”

“Theres no way. She looks so different.”

“What is she doing with the Lycan King?”

I kept my head up, my arm locked firmly with Damon’s. I could feel the heat radiating off him, a constant reminder that I wasn’t

alone.

Standing at the inner entrance was Edward.

As the alpha of the Autumn Pack, he was the one who was meant to welcome the King, but as he walked towards him, he looked ike he had seen a ghost. His mouth hung open slightly, and his eyes were wide as his gaze bounced from me to the King.

‘Your…Your Majesty.” Edward stammered. He tried to bow, but he was so shaky he almost tripped over his own feet. “We…we didn’t ex…expect…I mean…….we are honoured to have you.”

Damon held my hand more tightly, even through those dark shades. I knew that he was looking down at Edward with boredom.

‘Is there a problem, Alpha?” Damon’s voice was like ice.

‘No! No problem at all.” Edward said quickly with a thin and high voice. He looked at me with eyes filled with confusion and something that looked like regret. “Eloise? What are you-”

‘She is my guest.” Damon interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. “And you are blocking our way.”

Edward turned pale and scrambled to the side, nearly falling into a decorative vase.

But the peace didn’t last long. I heard them before I saw them. The Lockwoods, my father, mother and brothers. And of course, Summer. They appeared to be in a state of total shock. My father’s face looked angry, and my mother looked like she was about to faint. She also looked confused, as did my brothers, who couldn’t diffuse the situation as they looked from me to Damon and Summer. She had a worried look, which I knew was fake, and I just knew she was about to perform a drama.

“Ellie! Oh, thank goodness you’re safe!” She cried out, stepped forward, and threw a flirtatious look at Damon. She had a shy smile on her face when she looked at him before turning to me. “Your Majesty, thank you so much for bringing our poor sister back to us. She’s been so lost lately, we’ll take her from here. I’m sure she’s been a huge burden on you.”

She reached out, her hand moving to grab my arm and pull me away from Damon. In a flash, two of Damon’s guards stepped forward, their heavy boots thudding against the floor. They blocked her path, their expression stone cold. Summer jumped back, gasping in surprise.

The guards didn’t move. They looked back at Damon, waiting for his command. Damon didn’t look at them; he looked at me. He was waiting to see what I wanted to do, and that gesture meant a lot to me in that moment. In front of this huge crowd, he wanted to ask what I wanted to do first; no one had ever cared enough about me to ask what I wanted.

Even though I knew I shouldn’t think about it like that.

I gave a slight nod, and Summer took that as an invitation to keep talking. She put on a sweet, manipulative smile.

“Ellie, come on here, honey,” she said, her voice dripping with fake kindness. “You shouldn’t be clinging to the King like that; it’s embarrassing. He’s a busy and powerful man, and you’re just…well, you don’t really belong on his level, do you? You’re making a scene, just come home with us and stop bothering His Majesty with your little games.”

I felt the anger flare up in my chest, but before I could say a word, the air in the room suddenly felt heavy, and it was hard to breathe. The temperature seemed to drop ninety–five degrees.

Damon stepped forward, pulling me closer to his side. He looked down at Summer and even, and I could tell je was looking at her like she was some insect he could crush without even trying.

“Listen to me very carefully, girl,” Damon said. His voice wasn’t loud, but I’m sure everyone in the ballroom could hear him.

‘This woman is my personal guest, and she is under my protection. If you don’t watch the way you speak to her, if you even think about insulting her again, my guards will waste no time in ripping your throat out right here in front of your parents.”

The entire room let out a collective gasp, and Summer’s face went completely white. She looked like she wanted to scream, but she was too terrified even to breathe. My father took a step forward to defend her, but one look from Damon made him freeze in his racks.
