The moonlight was thin and pale, barely cutting through the first thick layer of the fog that hung over the atmosphere. I stepped out of my sleek black sedan, the heels of designer pumps clicking sharply against the cracked asphalt. Each step felt like a victory lap.

I smoothed down the fabric of my dress, making sure I looked perfect. This was the night I’ve been planning for my whole life, the night that woman would finally leave my life for good and never return. The little girl, the flat tyre and the wolfsbane were a masterpiece. Nobody would ever suspect a little girl who was helpless and in danger, and Eloise, being the saint she was, would never ignore a kid like that, so I knew the plan would never fail.

I reached the heavy, rusted door of the warehouse. They looked like the entrance to a tomb. Good, I thought. It’s the tomb of her social life.

I pushed the door open, and it groaned on its hinges. I expected to see Eloise, tied up and weeping, but I was met with another scene. I wanted to know the moment she realised that she had lost everything.

But the warehouse was eerily still.

“Hello,” I called out. Expecting to see the men who would carry out the plan. “Where is the girl?” I asked, but I was replied with silence.

My brow furrowed, and I checked my phone. The text from the girl had said the job was done. So where is she? I walked down further into the dim light, the smell of grease and old metal making my nose wrinkle in disgust.

Then, I heard a sound. It was laughter coming from the shadows of the back dock.

“Did you hear that?” a voice rasped. It was a man’s voice. “She’s finally here, the boss said She’s a real prize.”

“Yeah, an heiress with skin like milk. I haven’t had payday this good in a long time.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. Something was very, very, very wrong. Why were they talking like that? Eloise was supposed to be here already. Why were they acting like that?

Without thinking too much, I quickly sent my location to my three brothers, then to Zeke. Whoever got to me first in case I was in danger here.

“Hey! You idiots, I’m here. Where did you put Eloise?”

Large shadows were emerging from the darkness, and I started panicking.

The leader, a man with a long, jagged scar on his arm, stepped forward and licked his lips. His gaze wandered over my expensive dress and the diamonds in my neck.

They looked at me like I was a piece of meat.

“I don’t know who this Eloise is, sweetheart,” he sneered. “But you’re the one who walked through that door, and you look exactly like the rich little doll we are expecting.”

“You don’t understand,” I yelled, my voice trembling with a mix of rage and panic.

They just laughed. “We don’t care who paid whom. In this warehouse, there are no names. There’s just us, and then there is you. And we have been waiting a long time to have fun with a girl like you.”

“Stay back!” I screamed, backing away from them. My heel caught on the floorboard and I nearly tumbled over. “I’ll have you all killed. My brothers will hunt you down and rip your hearts out.”

“They aren’t here now, are they? Or do you guys see any brother here?” the leader asked his followers.

“No, we don’t,” they both replied with a vicious smile.

I scrambled back, my hands searching frantically for anything I could use to defend myself until I stumbled upon an iron rod. I swung with all my might, but I was a girl who had never done anything like this in real life. The man caught the rod with one hand as if it were a twig. He wrenched it out of my grip and thrust it aside.
