Emma’s gaze was sharp and icy, and her voice matched–distant and commanding like she wasn’t giving Leander a choice.
“So, you’re saying I should call off the engagement with Maeve?” Leander asked, his brows drawing together as he looked directly at her.
Emma barely reacted, assuming his frown was because he didn’t want to let go, likely feeling bitter about it.
“I know you want to marry Maeve, and my dad may have promised it. Here’s the deal–I’m Maeve’s sister and won’t let her marry someone like you.” Emma’s words were blunt and unkind.
“Maeve is a big deal now–an international celebrity, famous and admired. You’re nowhere near her level. Her future husband should at least be the son of a powerful businessman, a politician, or a celebrity on her level. And you? You don’t even come close.”
She glanced around the room in disdain, adding, “This place? It’s barely ninety square meters. You’ve got schoolbooks lying around, which means you’re still in high school. Your clothes probably cost what, five hundred bucks at most? Do you seriously think you’re in any position to marry Maeve?”
“Even if she’s grateful enough to want to marry you, I won’t allow it, nor will all the men chasing after her. If you try to hold onto this, all you’re asking for is misery–people will mock look down on you wherever you go.”

At just eight years old, Emma was chosen by the sect master of the Tri–Peak Sect and brought into the world of ancient martial arts. Usually, martial practitioners carried an immense sense of pride and rarely saw ordinary people as equals.
Even authoritative politicians, the wealthiest businesspeople, and top superstars didn’t matter to Emma. She had always been indifferent to them–especially not someone like Leander, an ordinary high school student. The only people she respected were those with real strength and skill in the martial arts world.
Emma didn’t care how he’d take it. She was laying it out as it was, wishing he’d get the message and back off from the engagement.
Outside, Elias sneered at Leander with contempt. In the martial arts world, prodigies like him had their pick of prominent figures, with families vying for the association. This illustrated the immense power martial practitioners wield–surpassing wealth and influence.
In contrast, Leander appeared “helpless” when Emma insisted on ending the engagement, highlighting their significant emotional gap.

Leander stroked his chin, patiently letting Emma finish her thought. He then shrugged and let out a light, taunting laugh, saying, “Emma, I don’t get it–what’s the purpose of all this? I don’t even know if I’m engaged with Maeve.”
A year ago, Leander had been passing through the wilderness near Candor when he stumbled upon a teenage girl about to jump off a cliff. She was blind and trying to end her life. He had saved her without thinking much of it. That teenage girl was Maeve, Emma’s sister.
Maeve had been stricken with a rare sickness that left her blind, trapped in darkness, and feeling an overwhelming loss of hope. With no will to live, she blindly navigated to the cliff, determined to end her life by jumping.
After assessing her condition, Leander assured her he could heal her, rekindling her desire to live. Drawing on his medical expertise, he gathered numerous herbs and crafted a remedy that restored her sight.
Leander left after dropping Maeve off with the Reyne family in Candor, leaving the medicine behind. He had briefly met Maeve’s dad, but there was no mention of any engagement—at least nothing that registered with him. Essentially, he was completely unaware that he was supposedly engaged to Maeve.
“Emma, right?” Leander stated, reclining comfortably on the couch.
“Back then, all I did was bring Maeve home and have a brief conversation with your dad regarding the medicine, and that was it. If he brought up an engagement, I must have missed it. Maybe he did, but I wasn’t interested.”
“You came all this way to share absurd news about an engagement I was unaware of? Do you honestly believe that makes sense?”
Emma blinked, taken aback. Elias, standing behind her, looked just as confused.
It seems like Leander honestly doesn’t know about the engagement. Did we really go through all this—from Glenwick to Mornwick, even involving the Halloway family–for nothing?! Emma’s eyes narrowed, her frustration growing. She had spent all this time trying to force him to end an engagement that wasn’t even on his radar. She felt ridiculous.
Leander then got up and tossed the bank card onto the table before Emma. She grabbed it, and he sat back down, sounding indifferent.
“Maeve? She was just someone I happened to help. To me, saving her was no different than helping a stray animal. It wasn’t a favor in my eyes, and I have no intentions of asking anything from your family. Your money means nothing to me.”
He waved his hand dismissively. “I’ve said what I needed to. You can leave now. This is my place; I can decide who stays and who goes. Please don’t disturb me again.”

Did he just compare Maeve to a stray animal, and now he’s telling us to go?As young prodigies among martial practitioners, Elias and I are always treated with the highest respect. Here’s this ordinary guy with no internal strength telling us to get lost? How dare he?! Emma thought, her anger rising.
She took a deep breath to steady herself. Her eyes grew cold again as she replied, “Whether you truly didn’t know or are merely pretending because of your pride, let me be clear–starting today, there is no engagement between you and Macve. I’ll rescind the offer since you refuse the money. From this point forward, the Reyne family owes you nothing.”
As she began to leave, Elias called out from the doorway, “Brat, let me give you some advice. Don’t go around thinking you’re some hero, and don’t even think about forcing Emma’s sister into marrying you. If you try that, don’t hold me responsible for the consequences.” He cracked his knuckles, his tone threatening.
Still lounging on the couch, Leander just smiled and replied, “With skills like yours, you think you can threaten me?”
Just as he was about to leave, Elias suddenly stopped. Anger flared in his expression as he turned back, his gaze sharp. “Brat, are you looking for trouble?”
