Isabel knew when to stop. She wiped her tears, looking wronged as she said, "If my leaving will make Ms. Yaxley happy, I'm willing to do so."
Before she left, she turned and shot me a long look.
Steve's back was facing her, but I could clearly see the hatefulness and evil in her look.
I didn't regret using that trick against Isabel, not even a little. It was what she deserved for trying to upset me whenever she had the chance.
But I hadn't done it to fight over a man or win his favor.
Deep down, I knew that Steve and I would never get back together.
After Isabel left, Steve said, "I'll have someone contact the hospital where you gave birth to check whether they still have any ultrasound records of the child."
I paused, looking despondent.
It had been a long time since the words I said or the requests I made failed to elicit a response from Steve.
This time, he unexpectedly cared about something I wanted.
But I no longer needed him to care.
Steve's phone rang.
It was a working day, but he hadn't gone to the company. Calls from work began to flood his phone.
During the first few calls, Steve's tone remained relaxed as he idly issued instructions.
Then, he received a call, and his brows furrowed tightly. He grimly asked, "Which data went wrong? Must we delay the launch?"
A response came over the phone.
He massaged his temples and said, "Okay. Then let's temporarily delay the launch. Cooperate with their investigations. I don't want anything to go wrong."
