Griffin Group's cardiopulmonary support device was going to be listed on the market soon, anyway. Even if Steve knew that I was looking for a lawyer to divorce him, what was he going to do about it?
Steve and I rested for around two hours in the emergency hospital room.
By the time the IV drip finished, we were both awake, and the nurse helped remove the needle from my arm.
The nurse had just left the room when I heard Isabel's voice from outside. "Miss, may I ask if this is Zara Yaxley's room?"
"You… Are you Isabel Stone?"
The nurse was extremely excited as she screeched, "Can I get your autograph?"
"Sure."
Isabel was always warm and gentle when she talked to her fans. After she signed her autograph, she walked into the room, carrying a basket of fruits.
I might've been fooled by her gentle and sweet demeanor as well if I hadn't experienced her evil and cruel side before.
But now, I had no strength left in me to waste my breath on a woman as duplicitous as her. I told Steve, "Your child's mother is here to bring you home. You should leave."
Steve glanced at me from the corner of his eye. He remained seated as he asked Isabel, "Why did you come here?"
Isabel set the fruit basket on the table and said gently, "I just dropped Dorothy off at kindergarten. On my way back, I couldn't help feeling guilty. If I hadn't said the necklace was missing yesterday, Ms. Yaxley wouldn't have fallen ill."
Steve's voice was still gentle when he told her, "This has nothing to do with you. Don't overthink it. You should go home first!"
Isabel's beautiful eyes glimmered as they focused on Steve.
Seeing he had no intention of leaving, Isabel went on, "I'm truly sorry, Ms. Yaxley. The necklace doesn't matter anymore. It was originally a token of Steve's love for you, after all."
She made it sound like she was being generous and had forgiven me for "stealing" the necklace.
Since Isabel insisted on staying and trying to upset me rather than leaving, I had no choice but to match her shamelessness. I would start lying through my teeth as well.
So, I opened my mouth and weakly said, "Ms. Stone, I asked Juliet to go to the master bedroom today to look for the ultrasound of my child from my pregnancy checkup three years ago. Juliet told me the ultrasound wasn't in the bedside cabinet drawer. Did you or Steve keep it somewhere else?"
Isabel looked at me in surprise. "Did you remember wrongly? I don't remember seeing an ultrasound in the drawer."
It's true. She wouldn't have seen it.
At the same time, the doctor entered my room to make his rounds.
Seeing the condition I was in, the doctor helplessly remarked, "Didn't I just tell you? Patients with stomach issues must maintain a good mental state. You shouldn't upset her."
After the doctor left, I was still crying.
Isabel was also on the verge of tears as she desperately tried to explain to Steve that she hadn't seen the ultrasound.
However, Steve unexpectedly didn't try to defend her the way he used to. Instead, he simply said, "The paparazzi haven't been trailing you as much lately. I'll have Jake find you a new place to stay, and he can help move your things over."
Isabel looked at him in shock. Then, she looked back at me, her beautiful eyes filled with disbelief.
I was also surprised that Steve would make such a decision.
"Steve…"
Isabel's tears looked like falling pearls as she said with a sob, "Why won't you believe me? I really didn't take Ms. Yaxley's ultrasound. I'm innocent."
Steve still didn't change his mind.
