Just as I was about to look away from his intense gaze, Kade spoke first. “Nira…” His voice was low. “Are you really okay now?”
Before I could answer, he continued. “After I woke up, talked to Briar.” His expression darkened. “He told me I was poisoned with several different toxins. The situation was incredibly complicated.” His eyes locked onto mine. “Those poisons were vicious. Even with your physical strength, taking them into your own body still caused you to collapse.”
A shadow of pain crossed his face. “You shouldn’t have risked your life for me.” The guilt and heartache in his eyes were impossible to miss.
“Whether you’re worth it or not is my decision.” I set down the soup bowl and met his gaze calmly. “To be honest…” I paused briefly. “My body hasn’t fully recovered yet. I only told Mr. Edith Howell I was fine because I didn’t want her worrying.”
The color immediately drained from Kade’s face. “What?” He shot to his feet. “The poison isn’t gone? Or is something else wrong?”
Panic flashed through his eyes. “No, we’re going to the hospital right now.”

I quickly grabbed his wrist and pulled him back onto the couch. His skin felt slightly cool beneath my fingers. For some reason, the contact made my heart skip a beat.
“Sit down first.” I deliberately softened my voice. “Let me finish my words.”
Kade sat back down. His eyes never left me. “Nira, what exactly happened to you?”
I smiled faintly. “The poison is gone, but the detox process was complicated. The toxins stayed in my body for too long. Even though they’re gone now, they left behind some lasting effects.”
His voice grew hoarse. “What kind of effects? Are they serious?”
I pressed my lips together. “My adoptive dad said my body will remain weak for the next couple of years, so I can’t fight for now. I need plenty of rest, can’t get cold or overwork myself, and have to avoid letting my emotions fluctuate too much.”
Because of that, Lyra’s condition had become even more unstable. The energy inside her had already been fluctuating before. Now she periodically fell into dormancy without warning.
When I left the Silvermoon Pack, my adoptive dad hadn’t wanted me to leave at all. But there were too many problems I still had to solve, and I didn’t want Kade spending the rest of his life wondering where I’d gone.
Of course, none of that was something I could tell him.
After hearing everything, Kade looked even more miserable. “No wonder, I kept feeling like something was different about you. You don’t have the same energy you used to.” He lowered his head. The guilt nearly swallowed him whole. “When I think about everything you suffered white saving me…” His jaw tightened. “It feels like needles are stabbing my heart. I can barely breathe.”
“Nira…” His voice cracked. “I’m sorry. It’s all because of me. If you hadn’t saved-”
I cut him off. “Then you’ll have to protect me while I recover.” I deliberately kept my tone light and playful.
Kade froze. For a second, he simply stared at me. Then his expression turned dead serious. “Nira, I’ll protect you.” His eyes held mine. “From now on, I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”

Looking at his earnest expression, I couldn’t help smiling. I blinked at him mischievously. “Then I’ll be counting on you, Mr. Howell.”
I started to stand, only for the room to suddenly spin. A wave of dizziness hit me without warning. My body swayed.
“Nira!” Kade reacted instantly. His arm shot out and caught my shoulders before I could fall. “What happened?” His voice was full of panic.
I closed my eyes for a few seconds. After the dizziness eased, I opened them again. “I stood up too fast. A little dizzy, that’s all.”
His arm tightened around me, holding me securely against him. “How do you feel now? Should I call a doctor?”
I laughed softly. Then tilted my head back to look at him. “Did you forget?” A teasing smile appeared on my lips. “I’m a doctor.”
Kade’s POV:
As she spoke, her breath brushed lightly against my neck, carrying a faint medicinal scent.
My body instantly stiffened, and my heartbeat lost all control.

I looked down at her. My gaze settled on her fluttering eyelashes. An indescribable feeling surged through me.
“I…” My mind went completely blank. At that moment, I honestly had no idea what I was trying to say.
Nira blinked innocently. “You look really red.”
She reached up and placed her cool hand against my forehead. A smile tugged at her lips. “Kade.” Her voice was soft. “Do you have a fever?”
The distance between us was dangerously close. It was close enough to feel each other’s breathing. The air itself seemed charged with something neither of us wanted to name.
My heartbeat grew faster, like it was trying to escape my chest.
I opened my mouth, then closed it again. For the first time in my life, I didn’t know what to say.
Business rivals, pack politics, and even the Elders were easy to deal with. But when it came to her, I was completely helpless.
