Nira’s POV

“What is it?”

Before he could answer, my ears caught a sound outside the door.

I looked over just as the door swung open, and two soldiers carried in a pale young woman. Her right arm was wrapped in a thick layer of bandages, but the blood seeping through had turned a bizarre, greenish–purple hue, Scent–wise, she was just a low- ranking Omega, and her inner wolf felt incredibly weak.

“This is Emily. She’s a civilian from a’border town who was injured three days ago while playing down by the river, Noah explained, gesturing for the soldiers to remove the bandages. “Our military doctors are completely stumped.”

When the dressings came off and exposed the wound, I gasped and bolted out of my chair.

The gash on Emily’s arm was horrific. The surrounding flesh had turned an ashen grey, and her veins had erupted into an abnormal, purplish–red web.

“Please… help me…” Emily whimpered, cold sweat dripping down her forehead.

I snapped on a pair of medical gloves and gently touched the edge of the wound. “Do you feel any sharp pain?”

“No… It’s completely numb,” Emily said, shaking her head. “But the infection keeps spreading.”

I immediately pulled out an acupuncture needle and pricked several pressure points around the injury, watching the reaction closely. When the tip of the needle tinged a faint blue, my heart dropped, and a heavy weight settled in my chest.

“This isn’t a normal injury,” I said, turning to Noah with a grim expression. “It’s a biochemical toxin infection. Worse, it’s been weaponized. The poison alters an infected werewolf’s genetic makeup, turning them into a mutant.”

The thought of mutant werewolves instantly brought my mind back to the secrets surrounding my own lineage. Could there be a connection?

Before I could delve deeper into the thought, I noticed Noah’s face drain of color.

He barked a quick order for the soldiers to take Emily out to rest. The moment the door clicked shut, he rushed over, threw the deadbolt, and turned to me, visibly shaken. “Are you absolutely certain?”

“My needle test indicates the presence of thiophosphate compounds, which is a textbook signature of military–grade neurotoxins.” I reached into my medical pouch, pulled out a small vial, and handed it to him. “Have her take this immediately. It will buy us some time by slowing down the spread.”

Noah took the vial and relayed the instructions through his communicator. Then, leaning his hands heavily on the desk, he looked up at me. “We’ve already identified seventeen similar cases along the border. We suspect…”

“It was intentionally deployed,” I finished for him, entirely certain. “A toxin like this doesn’t exist in nature. Noah, I need access to all the patient files immediately, and-” I paused, steeling myself. “I need to visit the site where she was infected.”

Noah snapped his head up. “Absolutely not. It’s too dangerous!”

“But it’s the fastest way to engineer an antidote.” I pulled out a notepad and quickly jotted down a list of ingredients. “Get these

medicinal herbs sent to the border as soon as possible. Time is of the essence.”

“Understood.” Noah took the list and immediately forwarded the order. Then, he pressed the intercom on his desk. “Get a chopper prepped immediately. Fly Nira otto Easton Ridge,”

Over a dozen patients lay inside, all suffering from the exact same symptoms as Emily.

“Right away,” Matthew said, calling his men inside.

Ethan pushed the door open and gave me a crisp military salute. “Nira, please follow me.”

After passing through three layers of encrypted security doors, I found myself in a state–of–the–art raboratory. It was fully equipped, and all the patient files I needed were neatly arranged on the desk.

“Commander Noah instructed us to give you whatever you need,” Ethan said, handing me a keycard. “This is your temporary pass. Your security clearance has already been upgraded.”

I nodded, tying my long hair back into a sleek, no–nonsense ponytail. “I need three days,” I said firmly.

Matthew’s eyes widened in surprise. “That fast?”

“Time isn’t on our side.” Leaving it at that, I snapped on a pair of lab gloves and focused entirely on inspecting the medicinal herbs. “Oh, by the way, my phone…”

“Protocol dictates we hold onto your communication devices temporarily,” Ethan said apologetically. “However, Commander Noah has granted special permission for you to contact the outside world once a day.”

I thought about it for a second and nodded. “Fair enough.”

The moment the heavy lab doors sealed shut, I buried myself in my work.

Outside, the sky gradually darkened, but I lost all track of time. It wasn’t until three in the morning that I finally finished synthesizing the first batch of experimental antidote.

Massaging my stiff, aching neck, I looked up at the security camera on the wall. “I need a live subject for testing.”

The camera tilted up and down in a slight nod, signaling that the message was received.
