Chapter 248 I Owe You Way More

Nira’s POV

As I started walking toward Damian’s room, he quickened his pace to match mine. “I’ll go with you.”

“No need,” I said, shaking my head. “I can go by myself.”

What if he and Damian started brawling right in front of me? If I got caught in the crossfire, Cyra would definitely lose control and fight back, and then my true rank would be totally exposed.

My mind raced, frantically weighing the chaotic possibilities.

Kade’s POV

Hearing her reject me so bluntly left me completely speechless. My hand froze mid–air, and my Adam’s apple bobbed as I struggled to find my voice. “Nira, I…”

“What?” Nira asked, arching an eyebrow. “Don’t you trust me?”

The words caught in my throat.

It wasn’t her I didn’t trust; it was Damian! The way that guy looked at Nira–as a fellow apex alpha werewolf, I knew exactly what it meant. But Nira wasn’t my mate anymore, nor was she my fiancée. I didn’t even have the right to be jealous.

After a tense silence, the only thing I could manage to squeeze out/was a stiff, “I’ll wait for you here.”

Nira offered a faint smile, then turned and walked away.

I stared after her until she disappeared around the corner, then stumped back onto the bench in defeat. Tugged fiercely at my tie, I couldn’t stop the images of Nira and Damian alone together from flashing through my mind. Would Damian take this chance to confess? Would Nira be moved by him? When she said she needed to “think about it,” was *this* what she was considering?

The more I dwelled on it, the more suffocating the restlessness became.

Nira’s POV

I pushed open the door to Damian’s room and stepped inside. The moment he saw me, his face lit up with genuine delight.

“Nira, you’re here,” he said, propping himself up in bed.

Seeing the thick layers of bandages wrapped around his forehead and hands, a sudden tightness gripped my throat, and a wave of guilt washed over me. “Does it still hurt?”

Damian offered a dismissive smile. “Just a few scratches.” He purposely moved his arm around to prove his point. “See? Good as

new.”

I sat down on the edge of the bed, my expression turning serious as I offered my heartfelt gratitude. “Thank you. If it hadn’t been for you…”

Stop right there” Damian raised a hand to cut me off, a rare softness in his eyes. “If we’re keeping score, I owe you way more” Leaning back against his pillows, he looked at me with a warm, sincere smile. “If you hadn’t saved my life back then, those roque rogues would have torn me to pieces. I opened my mouth to respond, but he beat me to it. “If you really feel that bad about it…” He pointed toward the nightstand. “How about peeling an apple for me??

I immediately picked up the paring knife and got to work.

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, dancing across Nira’s slender fingers. Taking advantage of her lowered gaze as she peeled the apple, I let my eyes trace the delicate profile of her face, greedily drinking in the sight of her. The light caught on her long eyelashes, casting soft shadows beneath them. She looked completely absorbed in the task, her brow slightly furrowed and her lips pressed together.

Before I could look for long, however, she held out the finished apple. “There you go.”

The skin had come off in one continuous ribbon, as perfect as a piece of art.

As I took the apple from her, my fingers brushed against the back of her hand, the fleeting warmth sending a subtle jolt through my chest. I took a bite, the sweet, crisp juice bursting across my tongue. “It’s really sweet.”

I took another large bite, my eyes completely unable to leave her face. “This is the sweetest apple I’ve ever tasted.”

Outside the window, the sycamore trees rustled softly in the breeze, a single leaf swirling down to land on the sill. I knew right then that I would remember this moment for a very, very long time.

Kade’s POV

The moment Nira stepped out of Damian’s room, I was right at her heels, following her every step. Anxiety had me mindlessly rubbing my cuffs, words dying in my throat over and over as my gaze darted between her profile and the corridor ahead.

“Um,” I finally spoke up, my voice dropping a fraction lower than usual. “You and Damian…”

Nira didn’t slow her pace, though a small smile tugged at her lips. “Hmm?”

My Adam’s apple bobbed as I carefully weighed my words. “Is he… recovering well from his injuries?”

“Much better,” Nira replied. “Didn’t you go see him yesterday, too?”

I pressed my lips together, following her in silence for a few more paces. Sunlight streamed through the corridor windows, stretching our shadows long across the floor.

“Nira…” I looked at her, my heart in my throat. “Are you still angry with me?”

Nira stopped and turned to face me, her beautiful eyes turning amber in the sunlight. She tilted her head, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Depends on your behavior.”

Jett thought it over for a moment. “What if you made something with your own hands? Doesn’t Nira love tiramis?”

My eyes lit up. “Now that’s a good idea. I’ll make her a tiramisu myself!”

I baked from daytime into the night, and from darkness until dawn. After countless failed attempts, I finally managed to make a tiramisu I was satisfied with. I packaged it beautifully right away and headed to Nira’s room.

Standing outside her door, I found myself feeling more nervous than I had been when walking onto the battlefield with my father. Taking a deep breath, I gently pushed the door open to find Nira still asleep. The morning sun hit her eyelashes, casting delicate shadows across her face.
