Chapter 25 Lost Its Effect

“Out of the three of us, only Kade is fully conscious,” Briar said calmly, confirming what Zane had just said.

I didn’t hesitate. I stepped up to Kade, bent down, and gently cupped his face in both hands, forcing him to meet my eyes.

Kade blinked, clearly caught off guard by my sudden move, but his gaze locked on mine–and the heat behind it grew more intense with every second.

We were so close now, our faces nearly touching.

“Whoa,” Zane said, nearly falling off the couch. “Are we all seeing this?”

Briar stared wide–eyed, completely frozen. Just when I thought I had him, a warm hand suddenly covered my eyes.

Kade leaned back, voice steady and just a touch dry. “Girl, don’t start picking up bad habits.”

Zane raised his brows, clearly amused. “Girl? Isn’t she eighteen now?” He gave a dramatic pause. “If she still had her wolf, she’d probably already be mated by now. Doesn’t sound like a little girl to me.”

He shot Kade a look, smirking. “Wait a second… are you actually spoiling her?”

Kade shot him a sharp glare. Zane shut up immediately. I shoved Kade’s hand off and stared at him, annoyed.

“You seriously resisted my charm?” I asked in disbelief.

Lyra’s seduction ability was something no one had ever resisted. But Kade? It hadn’t worked on him at all.

Was it because his wolf soul hadn’t fully awakened yet?

I was still trying to figure it out when Zane jumped back in, loud as ever.

“Wait wait wait, did you just try to use seduction on him?” he blurted. “Try it on me next!”

He leaned in between us, eyes shining like a puppy begging for attention. I turned to meet his gaze, blinking slowly.

Before I could even speak, a big hand smacked across Zane’s face, pushing him aside.

“Out of the way,” Kade said, not even pretending to be nice.

Zane looked crushed. “Can’t even get a test run…”

“You wouldn’t stand a chance,” I said bluntly.

Zane’s face twitched. He puffed up, trying to save face. “Come on, I’m a top–tier beta. I was fighting beside Kade when I was still a teen. You think I’ve got weak willpower?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Don’t buy it.”

Zane practically jumped to his feet. “You little brat-”

He made a show of reaching for my collar, but one warning glance from Kade made him freeze. With a dramatic sigh, he slumped back onto the couch like a kid who just lost his favorite toy.

“Unfair,” he muttered, pouting. “Kade, you’ve got a favorite and it shows.”

Kade ignored him entirely and turned back to me. “Has the Soren family made any arrangements for your schooling?” he asked.

The question caught me off guard.

I hadn’t even thought about going back to school. I blinked and shook my head. “No.”

“Hmph. Funny,” Zane said, clearly riled up again. “The Sorens threw everything they had into getting Janice into Howard Academy, the best school in the alliance. Spared no expense.”

His words hit a nerve, but not in the way he expected. He actually knew how differently the Sorens had treated me.

I gave him a curious look.
