“Shh!” Jenna panicked, clapping a hand over her mouth. “Don’t say that!”

She cast a nervous glance out the window. “That girl is untouchable now. Even the Howell family…”

Ever since Nira had forced those bugs down her throat, Jenna had suffered from nightmares for three straight years. Just mentioning her name made her feel as though something were crawling in her own throat.

“Mom!” Janice snapped, her voice spiking before she quickly hushed it. “She’s just a useless reject who doesn’t even have a wolf soul. She’s only riding on Kade’s coattails to flaunt her power and scam people. Are you really that afraid of her?”

Aven sighed, pulling Janice down to sit beside him. “Janice, you don’t understand. Ever since everything fell apart three years ago, the Soren family… we’re barely hanging onto this old estate.”

“Then that’s all the more reason to get justice!” Janice cried, her wolf eyes flashing fiercely as she bolted to her feet. She violently yanked down her collar to expose her horrific scars. “Look at what she did to me!”

Jenna wept at the sight of the injuries, yet she still shook her head. “We can’t… We can’t afford to cross the Howells, or whatever forces are backing Nira…”

The light faded from Janice’s wolf eyes, replaced by a calculating glint. Suddenly, her tone softened. “Fine… I’ll listen to you.”

Wiping away her tears, she added, “As long as I can be with you all, that’s all that matters.”

Relieved, Jenna hugged her tightly. “Good girl. I’ll go get your room ready right now.”

Once Jenna left, Aven said softly, “Janice, don’t blame Mom. She’s/genuinely terrified…”

Janice offered a compliant smile. “I understand.” She gently squeezed Aven’s hand. “I’m just glad our family is reunited.”

However, the moment Aven walked out, the smile vanished from Janice’s face.

She strode over to the window and stared off toward the distant Howell estate, her sharp wolf claws digging deep into her palmas.

“Pathetic, useless cowards,” Janice muttered disdainfully. “You might be afraid of her, but I’m not.”

“Nira…” she whispered. “You think you’re safe just because you have the Howells backing you?”

She pulled a small vial from her coat, filled with an eerie blue powder. “I’ll show you what a living hell really feels like…”

Outside, the rain poured harder, drowning out her venomous whispers.

Nira’s POV

After Kade and I returned to the Howell estate, I stood quietly out on the terrace, watching the rain fall.

“You haven’t fully recovered yet. Why are you standing right in the draft?”

A deep voice came from behind me, and a moment later, a pair of warm arms wrapped around my waist. Kade rested his chin gently on my shoulder, his warm breath brushing against my ear.

“Canceled,” Kade replied simply, kus fingers gently running through the loose hair cascading over my shoulders. “Dr. Beyond slipped into the old Soren estate tonight”

I turned around in his arms and looked up into his deep eyes, completely unfazed. “When?”

“Seven seventeen this evening,” Kade said, providing the exact time as his brows furrowed slightly. “She went in through the back door and hasn’t come out since.”

I raised an eyebrow, completely unsurprised. It was exactly as I had anticipated.
