The moment I opened the front door, a mug came hurtling toward me. It flew past my face, grazing my forehead before crashing against the wall behind me.

“Where the hell have you been?” my father, Gregory Calloway, roared, his fangs fully exposed. “Do you have any idea we’ve been waiting on you for dinner this whole time?”

I lowered my head and forced myself to stay calm despite the sadness and anger building inside me. Wiping away the thin line of blood at my temple, I said quietly, “I’m sorry, Dad. I-”

“Oh, cut it out,” my mother snapped, her wolf eyes flashing. “You’re a useless Omega. All you ever do is run around instead of staying where you belong.”

Mason was stretched out on the couch playing a video game.

“She was probably out with some guy,” my fifteen–year–old brother said casually. “I saw her getting out of a luxury car.”

“A luxury car?” Dad’s eyes lit up instantly.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward him.

“Who brought you home?”

“It was…” I hesitated. “Nira and Mr. Howell.”

“Mr. Howell?” Mom immediately perked up.

At that moment, a news report happened to be playing on television. Mason pointed at the

screen.

“You don’t mean that guy, do you?”

“Kade?” Dad nearly shouted. “Mr. Howell Kade? The future Alpha King?”

Mom jumped in before I could answer.

“Kade drove you home himself? Is he interested in you?”

Dad looked me over from head to toe, studying me with the same expression someone might use while evaluating a purchase.

“You’re not bad–looking. A man like Mr. Howell probably wouldn’t seriously consider a low- ranking Omega, but if he’s willing to have some fun with you, that could work out very nicely for us.”

I fought back a wave of disgust and kept my expression obedient.

“Mr. Howell and Nira were only being kind enough to give me a ride.”

“You idiot!” Dad slammed his hand against the table. “Do you realize what kind of opportunity this is? Tomorrow you’re going shopping. Buy some decent clothes and make yourself look good.”

Mason immediately leaned forward.

“Dad, if she gets involved with the Howell family, does that mean we could move into Howell estate too? We’d never have to worry about money again.”

“Of course,” Mom said, grinning broadly. “By then Mr. Howell will be your brother–in–law. He could easily put you in charge of a small Pack somewhere.”

I stood there quietly, keeping my face composed while my heart grew colder with every word.

I had stopped expecting anything from them a long time ago.

I excused myself and went to the bathroom. The moment I shut the door, my phone began vibrating.

As soon as I answered, an angry voice exploded through the speaker.

“Brianna Calloway, you almost got me killed!”

Trevor sounded furious.

“Briar nearly tore me apart! You’re the one who begged me to get you into that race!”

I looked into the mirror, fixed my hair, and put on a sweet smile.

“Trevor, don’t be upset. You kept your promise and got me in, and I’ll keep mine. Nobody’s ever going to find out about that person you beat so badly.”

The line instantly fell silent.
