“There’s a batch of homemade cookies inside, along with a thank–you card,” Brianna explained as she handed the carefully wrapped gift box to Douglas with both hands.
Douglas accepted it and noticed a hand–drawn card attached to the package. A cheerful smiley face had been drawn across the front.
Brianna smiled shyly.
“I heard Nira sees a lot of patients every day. I figured she might appreciate something to keep her energy up.”
“I’ll make sure she gets it,” Douglas replied.
After watching her leave, he took the gift to the kitchen for inspection.
The cookies smelled delicious, and each one had been baked into the shape of a different animal.
Nira’s POV:
At that moment, I was in a specialized hospital ward, fully focused on treating the first patient with acupuncture.
The patient was a seven–year–old hybrid boy named Everett, born from a human and a werewolf.
He lay motionless on the hospital bed, staring blankly ahead.
“Everett, can you hear me?” I asked gently as I guided a needle into a precise point on his scalp.
His eyes shifted slightly, but he didn’t respond.
Nearby, the monitoring equipment showed unusually elevated brainwave activity.
A nurse handed me a report.
“The latest bloodwork just came back. Neurotoxin levels are down point–three percent compared to yesterday.”
I nodded and adjusted the position of another needle.
Channeling Lyra’s power required complete concentration. Sweat had already begun

gathering across my forehead, but I couldn’t afford the slightest distraction.

After silently reviewing the technique in my mind, I inserted the third needle at a specialized angle.
Suddenly, Everett’s fingers twitched.
“He reacted!” a nurse exclaimed.
I remained focused.
“Prepare the antidote. Half a milliliter intravenously.”
The moment that situation stabilized, another nurse hurried into the room.
“There’s a change with the patient in Bed Six.”
I immediately moved to the next patient.
As I inserted a needle into the top of his scalp, I felt something unusual.
There was resistance. The sensation was incredibly subtle, but enough to make my heart skip a beat. That shouldn’t have happened.
“Blood pressure and heart rate are both normal,” a nurse reported.
I had Lyra check the boy’s scent as well, but nothing seemed unusual.
So what was causing it?
I placed two fingers against the patient’s wrist. A moment later, I found it.
His pulse appeared steady on the surface, but every seventh cycle contained an almost imperceptible delay.
I had only encountered that pattern once before–in one of my adoptive father’s ancient medical texts.
Shadowbane Syndrome.
“Draw another blood sample,” I instructed immediately. “Use cold centrifugation to separate the serum.”
Conrad hesitated.

“This is already the third blood draw today. Every standard test has come back normal.”
I didn’t explain.
Instead, I took the collection needle myself.
As pale yellow blood flowed into the vial, I noticed something strange.
Under a particular angle of light, a faint blue shimmer flashed through the sample.
It was so subtle that it was almost impossible to see.
Back in the lab, standard testing once again showed nothing unusual.
Several physicians had already begun shaking their heads.
Ignoring their skepticism, I retrieved the specialized crystal apparatus my adoptive father had left behind.
The equipment required activation using sound waves at a specific frequency. It was a toxin- detection method passed down through his family.
“Your patient needs rest,” one of the older physicians said, reaching out to stop me.
Without looking up, I replied, “Give me twenty–four hours.”
Then I locked the laboratory door.
For an entire day and night, I alternated between acoustic resonance, magnetic–field interference, and other unconventional techniques.
When the first rays of dawn filtered through the window, the blood sample inside the crystal apparatus finally revealed its true nature under a specific ultrasonic frequency.
Countless nanoscale viral particles appeared like ghosts.
They disguised themselves as normal neurotransmitters while lying dormant, only becoming deadly once triggered by specific conditions.
I was finally getting close to the truth.
