“I want to help you,” Aven said, his voice tight with urgency. “Dad isn’t looking out for you–not really. He’s just trying to smooth–talk you into handing over that project…”
He dropped his voice to a hushed, conspiratorial tone. “After that, he’ll find a way to push you out for good.”
“Oh really?” I leaned forward slightly, my gaze cool and steady on him. “And what about you? What’s your play in this?”
“Me?” Aven’s eyes flickered away for a split second. “I can help you. If you’re willing, I can make sure you break free from the Soren family completely…”
“And in return?” I asked, a faint, knowing smile touching my lips. “What do you need from me?”
A flash of hunger passed through Aven’s expression. He lowered his voice even further. “Nira, if you help me take control of the company, I give you my word–no one from the Soren family will ever bother you again.”
He pressed on eagerly, “Dad’s getting old. All he’s ever cared about is running the Blazeborn Pack. He doesn’t know the first thing about running a business. If I hadn’t been holding things together behind the scenes all these years, the company would’ve crumbled…”
“So,” I interrupted slowly, “you want me to help you stage a takeover?”
Aven’s face shifted briefly before slipping back into that pleading mask. “It’s not a takeover—it’s a… necessary transfer of leadership. All you need to do is use your connections with the Howells to back me up…”
Watching him lay out his scheme so transparently, like some amateur trying to play a pro, I couldn’t help but laugh under my breath. “Aven, do you really think I’m that naive? That easy to fool?”
“Nira, you’ve got it all wrong,” Aven said, panic edging into his voice as he tried to smooth things over. “I’m your brother–your real brother. Why would I lie to you?”
“You help me, then hold that over my head, and use it to force me into doing whatever you want,” I stated coldly, calling him out without hesitation. “Aven, that’s quite the plan you’ve cooked up.”

His expression darkened instantly. He shot up from his seat, baring his teeth as a low growl rumbled in his throat. “Nira, don’t push your luck.”
“Finally showing your true colors? Done pretending?” I let out a cold, quiet laugh. “Weren’t you just going on about how much you wanted to help me?”
“Hah!” Aven snorted, malice gleaming in his eyes. “You think you’re untouchable just because you’ve got the Howells behind you? Don’t forget–you’re on Soren territory now.”
He snatched the glass from the table, his grip turning white–knuckled. “Since you won’t cooperate willingly, don’t blame me for playing dirty.”
With that, he slammed the door shut behind him and stormed off down the hall.
I listened until the sound of his angry footsteps faded away, a faint, icy smile curling at the corner of my mouth.
Seemed like everyone in the Soren family had their own agenda. Damon wanted to use me, Janice wanted to replace me, and Aven… wanted to climb right over everyone to get to the
top.
But from the way they were acting, one thing was clear now: only Jenna knew the truth about my real origins. The others had no idea that Janice was still very much a Soren by blood.

Aven’s POV:
That ungrateful little witch, Nira!
If it weren’t for the fact that she was connected to Kade and known throughout the Pack Alliance as Nira, I would’ve shifted right then and there and taught her a lesson she’d never forget.
Fuming, I stormed out of her room–only to run into Janice at the end of the hallway.
She stopped me, her slender fingers lightly adjusting my tie, her nails brushing ever so slightly against my throat. “Aven, why so worked up?”
She tilted her face up, her eyes glinting under the hall lights. “She didn’t go for it, did she?”
Looking at her soft, inviting expression, my anger began to dissolve. Without thinking, my tone softened. “She’s sharper than we thought. Didn’t buy any of it.”
“Don’t worry…” Janice gently pulled me toward her room, the sway of her skirt carrying a trace of her perfume. “We’ll figure it out.” She closed the door behind us and turned the lock.

“If she won’t play nice…” Janice took two wine glasses from the liquor cabinet, her crimson nails tapping lightly against the crystal. “Then we’ll make her play nice. As she handed me a glass, her fingertips grazed the back of my hand, stirring a heat that spread through me instantly.
I swallowed hard, threw my head back, and took a large gulp of wine. “What’s the plan?”
Janice let out a soft, low laugh before suddenly settling into my lap, cupping my face in her hands. “We follow Dad’s plan for now. Once I’ve learned all her healing techniques, we use that knowledge to control her. She won’t have a choice but to give in.”
My hands settled around her waist, and I nodded slowly. “Makes sense.”
