No wonder they were acting so bold–they must have thought there was no blood tie between them. But the truth was… they were actually related by blood.
I couldn’t help but wonder how Jenna would react if she ever found out. Would she completely fall
apart and regret the choice she made all those years ago?
It also explained Aven’s drastic change this time around. Janice had clearly gotten her claws into him.
The next morning as I stepped out of my room, Janice happened to walk out of hers at the same time.
Her eyes immediately landed on my custom designer dress, and I could almost see the envy flash in them before she quickly masked it. She let out a cold huff and strode purposefully toward me.
“Nira, wait up,” she called, her voice sickly sweet even as her pace sped up.
I kept walking, paying her no mind.
“Oh, Nira, watch out!” she suddenly cried out. Then, as if she’d lost her balance, her whole body pitched violently in my direction.
I knew it was another one of her games the second she moved. Drawing on Lyra’s power, I gracefully sidestepped, leaving her to stumble into empty air.
But Janice had thrown herself forward with so much force that she couldn’t stop. She staggered wildly–right toward the top of the staircase.
“Ah!” she shrieked, teetering on the edge.
At the very last moment, I “frantically” reached out and grabbed her wrist. The force of the pull made her spin slightly, and my hand “accidentally” caught her hard across the face.
“Smack!”
The sharp sound echoed in the stairwell.
I yanked her back to safety, but the slap had left her dazed. She stumbled backward and sank onto the steps.

“Janice, are you okay?” I crouched down, putting on a panicked act. “I was just trying to catch you–I didn’t mean to hit you…”
I made a point of hesitating, my eyes fixed on her cheek, which was already swelling.
Janice’s wolf–bright eyes blazed with fury. She pointed a shaking finger at me. “You did that on purpose!”
“How could you say that?” I blinked innocently, letting hurt show on my face. “If I hadn’t pulled you back, you’d be at the bottom of the stairs by now. You should be thanking me.” I glanced meaningfully at the steep drop behind her.
“What’s going on here?”
Damon’s stern voice cut through the tension as he approached, his brow furrowed.
Janice instantly burst into dramatic tears. “Dad! Nira hit me!”
I stood up calmly. “Janice almost fell down the stairs. I tried to catch her, and my hand might have… accidentally brushed her face.”
Damon’s eyes shifted between us, suspicion clear in his gaze, but he didn’t press further.
“That’s a lie!” Janice screamed, hysterical now. “She’s the one who-”
“Enough!” Damon cut her off sharply. “Nira saved you. Stop making a scene.”
He turned to me, his tone noticeably softer. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” I said with a light shake of my head. “Just a bit shaken. I’ll go get some water to settle my nerves.”
“Go ahead,” he said, almost kindly. Then he shot a warning glare at Janice. “You’d better watch your step.”
I knew perfectly well why he’d taken my side this time. It wasn’t out of fatherly love–it was because I was useful to him.
And that was exactly what I’d been counting on.
Janice stared in disbelief at Damon’s retreating back. When she finally turned her gaze back to me, the hatred burning in her eyes was fiercer than ever.
She glared, her words a low, venomous hiss. “Just you
wait.”

Crossing my arms, I answered her with a cold, composed smile before turning and walking gracefully down the stairs.
Janice’s POV:
That bitch Nira!
The force behind that slap was way too strong–no one without a wolf spirit could have managed that. She was definitely hiding something, and she was far more cunning than I’d given her credit for. I’d seriously underestimated her.
My cheek still stung where she’d struck me. Fuming, I stormed into Aven’s study and slammed the door behind me.
“Aven!” I cried out, pouring every ounce of grievance into my voice. “Look what that witch Nira did to me!”
Aven looked up, and his brow furrowed the moment he saw my swollen cheek.
He was at my side in an instant, his hands gently cradling my face. “What happened?”
“It was Nira!” I threw myself into his arms. “She tried to shove me down the stairs, and when I moved away, she slapped me on purpose…”
Aven’s eyes darkened instantly. He carefully traced the red mark on my cheek. “She dared to lay a hand on you?”
