When he pulled me closer, the mask I’d been wearing since we left Oscar’s villa came loose and felt away.
As my face became fully visible under the light, Edmund and several of the senior Hudson family members stared at me, all gasping in unison.
“She–she looks just like…”
“She looks exactly like Natalie!”
Edmund’s wife, Tasha, covered her mouth and took an unsteady step backward.
I noticed their reactions, but right then, I was more concerned about Gordon’s condition. Pretending not to hear their exclamations, I walked quickly to the bedside and began checking Gordon’s pulse and pupils with practiced ease.
When my fingers pressed gently against his wrist and I sensed his state, my heart sank.
Something was off–this wasn’t just a sudden illness.
Using the examination of his pupils as cover, I discreetly observed the old man’s fingernails and the coating on his tongue. My suspicions grew stronger.
Desmond asked anxiously, “Ms. Soren, what’s wrong with my grandfather?”
I withdrew my hand, keeping my expression neutral and revealing/nothing. “Gordon’s condition is complicated. He has pre–existing cardiovascular issues, but there are signs of neurological involvement as well.”
deliberately used clinical terminology. “What the doctors told you is accurate.”
The hope in Desmond’s eyes vanished instantly. “So you can’t help him either?”
Kade, standing in the corner, caught my gaze. A flicker of understanding passed between us.
He knew me well enough.
“It’s not that there’s no hope…” I replied, glancing briefly toward Kade as I spoke.
He blinked back knowingly. We were on the same page.
“Ms. Soren, what can we do?” Desmond stepped forward urgently, hope rekindling in his eyes.
“There’s an old bloodline therapy we could try,” I said, raising my voice slightly for effect. “But it requires two close blood relatives to participate.”
“Will it harm them?”
“After our family relocated to Meridia, we faced consequences for leaving our original pack. Some had their wolf spirit abilities diminished, others had their wolf spirits stripped entirely. Our physical state isn’t like that of typical high–rank werewolves,” Desmond explained with concern.

“Don’t worry. This therapy won’t cause arry harm, I reassured him.
“What exactly would we need to do?! Edmund asked, his voice low.

“I’ll need a quiet space. Only Mr. Hudson and Desmond should remain in the room.” I looked around at the others. “Everyone else. please wait outside. The treatment must not be interrupted.”
The butler glanced at Edmund, and when no objection came, he stepped forward promptly. “I’ll make the arrangements.”
Once the room had cleared and the door was closed, Desmond urged, “Ms. Soren, let’s begin.”
But I didn’t move. Instead, I came clean. “The bloodline therapy… it isn’t real.”
“What?” Desmond’s eyes widened in shock. “Ms. Soren, what are you saying?”
Edmund caught on quickly, his expression turning serious. “Ms. Soren, did you discover something? Is that why you asked everyone to leave?”
I nodded. “Gordon isn’t ill. He’s been poisoned.”
Desmond drew a sharp breath. “What?”
“Keep your voice down,” I whispered, signaling for caution, then continued. “I suspect the person who poisoned rim is likely within the Hudson family.”
Edmund’s face darkened. “I thought it was strange. My father has always been in good health. How could he suddenly…”
He clenched his fists, his wolf eyes blazing with anger. “Ms. Soren, why do you believe the poisoner is inside our family?”
“This type of poison requires three doses to take effect, over a period of at least two weeks,” I explained. “In simple terms, the attacker can control exactly when symptoms appear.
