As Nira worked with the needles, I couldn’t help stealing glances at her profile. The longer I looked, the more uneasy I felt.

Her focused expression–it was exactly like Natalie’s when she was younger.

My thoughts raced: If that child had survived, she’d be

about this age now.

I had no clue why Edmund kept watching me like that.

“Probably three more sessions,” I said, packing my needles away. “But his body will be extremely vulnerable until then. He needs round–the–clock protection–we can’t give whoever did this another opening.”

Otherwise, even if my adoptive father brought the full force of the Silvermoon Pack, it wouldn’t be enough.

“Don’t worry, Ms. Soren,” Edmund said, rising slowly. Though still pale, his sharp eyes had regained their commanding edge. “No one will lay a hand on my father again.”

He straightened his collar, and an almost palpable authority radiated from him.

“Alright then,” I said, clapping my hands softly and nodding toward him. “Let’s put on the show.”

So when the door finally opened, everyone waiting outside saw exactly what we’d planned.

Edmund and Desmond sat slumped in their chairs, looking pale and drained. I stood exhausted, my clothes damp with sweat. And Gordon, though still unconscious, now had noticeably healthier color in his face.

“Mr. Hudson!” The butler was the first to hurry inside.

“The treatment worked,” I announced clearly, making sure everyone could hear. “But Gordon will need at least three more sessions before he makes a full recovery.”

As I spoke, Kade swept a sharp gaze across the room, taking in every reaction.
