The moment they spotted the needle in my hand, their faces went pale with alarm. One of them blurted out, You’re not planning to poke his eye with that thing, are you?

The rest of the team grew visibly uneasy. A couple of the larger soldiers shifted their weight, a low growl rumbling in their throats as they bared their teeth in my direction, poised to lunge.

Stand down!Kade moved between us in a flash, his gaze icy as it swept over them.

Zachary approached, his expression grim. What’s the meaning of this?

I kept my voice steady, holding up the slender needle. This is for medical treatment. It can help his eye. There are sand particles trapped in his cornea. If we leave them, infection is inevitable.

That s insane!the wounded man cried out, voice shaking. Sticking a needle in someone’s eye isn’t medicineit’s torture!

Desmond stepped in to explain, It’s a form of traditional healing. It’s been practiced for centuries, especially in some older packs who kept the old ways

I’d learned it from Alexander.

His lineage came from a long line of highranking nomadic wolves. They’d traveled across continents, gathering all kinds of rare knowledgeone reason our pack, Silvermoon, held its strength for generations.

Not that I owed any of them that story

Sounds like old superstitious crap to me,one of the team members cut in roughly. Captain, they’re playing games with us.

Zachary stared hard at the fine needle in my hand, his brow deeply furrowed. Around here, putting a needle anywhere near someone’s eye is a threat.

The tension in the tent spiked, thick enough to choke on.

I drew a slow breath, then without a word, inserted the needle neatly into a point on the back of my own hand. Look. Harmless.

The team watched, stunned, as the needle stood steady in my skin. For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Just then, the injured man groaned again, his eye now swollen shut and angrily red.

1 moved closer, keeping my voice low but urgent. If we don’t act now, he will lose that eye.

Zachary hesitated, jaw tight, before finally giving a sharp nod. You better hope thistechnique of yours does what you say.

My hands worked quicklythree gentle, precise insertions around the injured eye. In under a minute, the man blinked in disbelief. The painit’s fading. How?

Exchanged glances rippled through the group. The one who’d protested the loudest earlier flushed and quietly holstered his

weapon.

But another still muttered, We don’t know what kind of hocuspocus this is

ignored him, already parking my kit

Suddenly, Kade stood, his posture alert Something’s off. This sandstorm isn’t natung!

He pointed toward hazy, moving shapes in the distance. That’s not just wind and dust.

Before his words fully landed, a piercing scream tore through the roaring gale.

One of our men was dragged into the swirling sand by several dark figuresgone in an instant.

Ambush! Desert marauders!Zachary yelled, drawing his sidearm, but his voice was swallowed by the storm.

Chaos erupted. Gunfire rang out blindly; some shifted forms in panic, scrambling for cover.

“Get down!Kade shoved Desmond and me behind a dune, then pulled a black handheld device from frie pack and activated it.

Almost immediately, sharp, painful static screeched through the raiderscommsI could just make it out over the wind. Agh! My ears!their leader snarled, tearing out his earpiece. Their coordinated advance broke into confusion.

Kade seized the moment. Desmond, smokenow!

Desmond and I threw three canisters at once.

Red, yellow, and blue smoke bloomed unnaturally through the storm, mixing with the sand into a disorienting, swirling haze.

The raiders stumbled, disoriented, shouting and colliding with each other.

Flank left!Kade called to Zachary, snapping a crisp hand signal/at the same time.

Zachary looked momentarily stunned at the rich kid’stactical knowhow, but instinct took over. Squad A, on me!

Fifteen minutes later, it was over.

Some marauders lay dead; the rest had fled into the storm. But we’d taken hitsthree men were shot, five more had nasty sand- burns from tooclose blasts.
