Nira’s POV:

My entire body froze

It took me a moment to shake off the shock, and then it all made sense. I stared straight at him. “You planned this?”

Richard walked toward me, relaxed and looking smug. “Exactly. We sent that guy out intentionally. I knew what you were capable of, so to sell the act, even he believed he was on a real mission to draw you in.”

I’d used my illusion on that spy, but he was just another piece in Richard’s game.

Clark muttered a curse under his breath. “Damn… we fell for it.”

Zachary and his team were forced to their knees in the sand, hands bound behind their backs, surrounded by armed outlaws.

The bandit leader took a drag from his cigarette and nudged Zachary hard in the shoulder with his boot. “You really thought you could just walk into our territory with this handful of guys?

“Can’t reach your wolf spirit here. Rank doesn’t mean a thing. Without your weapons, you’re no different from any helpless human in front of us.”

Zachary spat blood onto the ground and smirked. “Then fight me one–on–one, you coward.”

The leader laughed loudly and pressed the barrel of his gun against Zachary’s forehead. “You’ll get your turn soon enough.”

Nira’s POV:

The four of us were shoved roughly into the underground cells of the fort and locked in chains.

Behind me, the heavy iron door slammed shut with an echoing thud. The air down there was damp, thick with the smell of blood and decay. Rats scuttled in the corners, startled by the noise, and disappeared into the shadows with a rustle.

“On your knees!” A guard kicked Desmond behind the knee. He grunted and dropped to one knee, but kept his head held high, defiant.

Richard entered slowly, the sound of his boots sharp against the stone floor.
