I gave a slow nod. “Yeah, she didn’t deny it back then. In–fact, she swore she’d make sure Kade and I never got back togethers
Natalie’s face went still for a long moment. Then she leaned forward, voice fense. “What about the baby… the one from back then?”
Seeing how shaken she was, I kept my tone gentle. “Let’s take this one step at a time. We’ll figure it out.”
“I know Lila,” Natalie muttered, almost to herself. “That woman has no limits. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do.
“So it’s possible there was more to what happened than we knew…”
Hearing her say it out loud, a fragile sense of hope flickered inside me again.

The next morning, Kade and Desmond came by my temporary quarters.
Kade’s injuries had stabilized–his right arm was still in a cast, but some color had returned to his face. The moment he saw me, his eyes softened with concern. “You didn’t sleep last night, did you?”
I shook my head and handed him a glass of water. “Mr. Hawke needed monitoring through the night.”
Desmond cut in with a grin. “Uncle was sitting up this morning, Nira. You’re pretty amazing, you know that?”
We were still talking when Natalie walked in.
She offered me a tired smile. “About the medicinal herbs you requested–I only managed to track down half of them. And none of the suppliers will ship into the Dark Desert.”
I stood up. “Mr. Hawke and Kade can’t stay here any longer. We need to get them back to proper facilities as soon as possible.”
“I agree,” Natalie said. “Let me handle the arrangements.”
Desmond glanced between the two of us and let out a low whistle. “This is wild. Aunt Natalie… is Nira really not your daughter?”

Natalie’s gaze settled on me, soft and uncertain. “I don’t know…”
“Why not just run a DNA test?” Desmond suggested, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.
My heartbeat quickened.
Natalie turned to me, her voice careful. “Nira… what do you think?”
Kade and I shared a look. Then I nodded. “Once we’re back, I’m willing to take a DNA test with Ms. Hudson.”
I needed to know for sure. Even if the answer wasn’t what I hoped, I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life wondering.
“Good.” Natalie’s eyes brightened. “I’ll start arranging our departure immediately.”
