Nira’s POV

Trying to run?” The man pressed his boot down on my wrist, pinning me to the floor. “Stay still and take it it’ll hurt leg

rain clouded my vision. My body, once fast and formidable, felt frail and powerless, weakened by residual toxin lingering in my

system.

I gritted my teeth, reached for a shard of broken glass on the floor with my free hand, and slashed it hard against the man’s ankle.

“Damn it!” He yelped in pain and pulled his foot away. I seized the chance and rolled under the lab workbench.

“Help! There’s an attacker here!” I shouted at the top of my lungs, grabbing a bottle of alcohol and farling it at the room’s circuit breaker.

The lab fell into instant darkness. Only the dim green glow of the emergency exit light cast faint shapes across the room

The assailant cursed, his wolf-like eyes flaring bright, and lunged at me with deadly precision.

I dodged his strike, relying on the survival combat skills I’d learned as the heir of the Silvermoon Pack.

I held my breath and edged along the wall, but a sudden wave of dizziness made me knock over a test tube rack. It clattered loudly on the floor.

“I’ve got you.” The noise gave me away, and he charged forward, his sharp shifter claws aimed straight for

my

throat.

I twisted aside just in time. His claws grazed my neck, leaving a shallow, bleeding scratch.

I was cornered. A cold wall pressed against my back, and a ruthless killer filled with bloodlust stood directly before me, blocking all

escape.

“Who sent you?” I asked to buy time, my fingers quietly searching the underside of the lab bench behind me for anything I could

use.

“Ask that in hell.” He grinned viciously and lunged again, jaws wide to strike.

At that critical moment, the lab door slammed open, kicked violently from the outside.

“Nira!” Kade’s voice boomed through the dark room, thick with alarm.

Seeing his plan fall apart, the assassin shifted his target, swinging his lethal claws straight for my heart in a final killing attempt.

I used my last burst of strength to grab the vial of concentrated nitric acid on the counter and hurled it straight at his eyes.

“AAAAH!” A brutal scream tore from the man’s throat as the acid burned his skin.

Kade seized the opening, shifted into his wolf form, and charged forward. His distinctive white wolf sank its fangs into the assassin’s neck, severing his vital veins.

The man collapsed to the floor, yet a strange, eerie smile tugged at his lips.

My pupils shrank in dread. “He has poison hidden in his mouth-”

reenft nat finish my warning. The assassin had already bitten down on the poison sac hidden in his molar. Black venom blood trickled from the corners of his mouth. He twitched a few times before falling completely still.

Kade shifted back to human form in an instant, ignoring the dead assassin entirely. He taught me before I could collapse, his grip steady and protective; his eyes filled with worry. “Where are you hurt?”

I shook my head weakly and nodded toward the body. “Check his right wrist… the inside.”

Kade rolled up the man’s sleeve and examined the skin. “There’s a small spider tattoo on his inner wrist, glowing with an odd, eerie blue light.”
