Chapter 67 She Lost
Nira’s POV:

I walked up to Elise at an unhurried pace and stopped right in front of her, meeting her eyes without flinching.
“So what is it?” I said evenly. “You’re fine when you win, but the second I do, it’s cheating?”
I let out a quiet breath, my tone sharpening just slightly. “If you can’t handle losing, maybe don’t play. And if you’re going to throw accusations around, at least back them up.”
Her face tightened instantly.
“You don’t even have a wolf and you’re still talking to me like that?” she snapped, her voice rising. “I’ve been putting up with you for a while now. Let’s see how tough you really are.”
Her claws came out as she lunged straight at me.
She didn’t get far.
Kade stepped in front of me before she could even close the distance.
He didn’t say anything, but he didn’t need to. The shift in the air was immediate, heavy, controlled, and suffocating in a way that made even me pause for a split second. Elise froze mid–step, then instinctively backed off, her earlier aggression gone as quickly as it had appeared.
Kade finally spoke, his voice low and steady. “Elise, you lost. Own it. If you keep pushing this, you’re not going to like how it ends.”
That was enough.
She kept retreating, her confidence completely gone.
“Let’s go,” Aven said, stepping in and pulling both Janice and Elise with him. The three of them left quickly, not looking back.
“Don’t forget about tomorrow,” Tessa called after them, lifting her phone. “I’ll be checking.”
She turned the second they were out of sight and threw her arms around me. “Nira, that was incredible. You shut them down completely.”
Then she pulled back, suddenly narrowing her eyes at me. “Wait a second…

actually know how to bowl this whole time and just played dumb, did you?”
I smiled. “No. I didn’t. I learned today.”
She stared at me, stunned. “You’re serious?”

Her voice jumped. “You figured that out in under an hour and still beat Janice? And you don’t even have a wolf?”
I didn’t answer right away.
I knew what she meant, but it wasn’t that simple.
Lyra had already awakened, and she was the reason I picked things up this quickly.
I just wasn’t ready to explain that.
Before I had to respond, a glass of juice was set down in front of me.
I looked up. “Thanks.”
Kade took the seat beside me, relaxed, like he had nowhere else to be. He leaned back slightly, one leg crossed over the other, one hand resting along the armrest while his fingers tapped lightly in a slow rhythm.
He watched me for a moment, then said casually, “Aven’s been showing up at your school a lot lately.”
I paused, then looked at him.
If Aven were just visiting Janice, Kade wouldn’t have mentioned it.
It didn’t take long for the pieces to fall into place.
Elise.
Tessa had already told me that Elise and Janice had been sticking together constantly. If Aven kept coming to Howard Academy, there was no way he wasn’t running into Elise.
And given everything going on with the Sorens right now…
The intention behind it became obvious.
Damon needed leverage, and if aligning with Elise’s family could help stabilize things, then Aven getting close to her wasn’t random.

It was deliberate.
I felt a flicker of disgust.
They really were willing to use anything to get what they wanted.
And judging by Elise’s reaction earlier, it might already be working.

I looked back at Kade, and he gave a slight nod, like he already knew I had figured it out.
I took a sip of my drink before speaking. “They’re not even trying to hide it anymore. And from the way Elise acted, I’d say she’s already interested.”
For someone like her, if she hadn’t found her fated mate yet, Aven was a solid option. Strong, well–positioned, and more than capable.
There was no real reason for her to turn him down.
I let out a quiet, humorless laugh. “I’d like to see how her family reacts once they realize what this actually is.”
Kade didn’t respond.
After a moment, I added, more sincerely, “Thanks for telling me.”
We weren’t tied together in any way that required this. He could’ve stayed out of it.
The fact that he didn’t wasn’t something I ignored.
His gaze stayed on me, his tone even. “If they pull it off, it won’t stop there. It’ll circle back to you sooner or later. Better to see it coming.”
He wasn’t wrong.
If the Sorens got what they wanted, dealing with them later would only get harder.
I nodded slightly. “Then I won’t let it get that far.”
He didn’t push the topic any further, like it hadn’t mattered much to him in the first place.
I glanced at him, then said, “Give me your hand.”
He looked at me, caught off guard.
