The conversation drifted after that, easy and relaxed, and it wasn’t until later that Tessa and I headed back to campus.

I didn’t have any classes that afternoon, so I went straight to find Alden.

If I wanted to move out, I needed approval.

Howard Academy wasn’t like other schools. Most of the students came from powerful pack families, and the rules reflected that. Living off–campus required a signed approval from a faculty advisor.

I knocked on the office door. “Come in.”

I stepped inside.

Alden was sitting behind his desk, going through paperwork. When he saw me, he smiled. “Nira, perfect timing. Have a seat. I actually wanted to talk to you.”

I pulled out a chair and sat down. “What’s up?”

He didn’t waste time. “Have you thought about trying out for Shadowgrid Squad?”

That caught my attention.

Shadowgrid Squad was one of the most elite hacking teams in the entire pack alliance, originally built out of Frostpine Pack and now operating at a level that reached far beyond it. Their reputation on the Black Net alone was enough to make people pay attention.

Most of their early members came out of Howard Academy’s cybersecurity labs, but now they recruited from top schools across the board.

And once you were in, you didn’t go looking for opportunities.

They came looking for you.

Every major pack wanted talent like that.

Not just packs either. Other factions had been watching them closely for years.

Alden leaned forward slightly. “They’ve been leading international CTF competitions. Tryouts are opening next month. You were the first person I thought of.”

I didn’t answer right away. It was a rare opportunity. No question about that.

But I had a lot going on already. If I got in, the training alone would take serious time.

“When are tryouts?” I asked.

“Next month,” he said. “You’ll be fine schedule–wise. Why?”

“I’m planning to move off–campus,” I said. “I don’t want anything overlapping.”

He frowned slightly. “Why the move?”

“I need space,” I said simply. “Dorms are crowded, and I’m juggling three majors. I work better somewhere quieter.”
