I met his gaze without hesitation. I’d like to test out of the freshmanlevel major courses. I’ve already covered that material before, so sitting through them again wouldn’t really help me. I want to put that time toward other areas instead.

The faint smile on his face disappeared almost instantly.

He leaned back slightly, brows tightening as he studied me. Nira, academics don’t work like that. Intro courses may seem basic, but they’re the foundation for everything that comes after. You don’t skip foundations just because you think you’re ready.

I understand,I said, keeping my tone steady. But I’m not guessing here. I’ve already mastered the material. If you’d like, you can test me.

He didn’t respond right away. Instead, he held my gaze for a long moment, weighing whether I was serious or just overestimating myself.

Finally, he stood and walked over to a filing cabinet. After flipping through a few folders, he pulled out a test and handed it to me.

This is last year’s sophomore exam,he said. Finish it within the standard time. If you score at least eighty percent, I’ll consider your request.

I took the paper, found an empty seat, and got to work.

The office fell quiet except for the steady scratch of my pen. Once I started, everything settled int

place. The questions weren’t unfamiliar, and my thoughts moved cleanly from one problem to the next without hesitation.

Time passed, but I barely noticed.

By the time I set my pen down, I already knew I hadn’t missed anything obvious.

I stood and handed the test back to him.

Alden reviewed it carefully, marking as he went. At first, his expression stayed neutral, but gradually, that shifted. His eyes widened slightly, and by the time he reached the last page, the surprise on his face was impossible to miss.

He set the paper down and looked at me again, this time with clear interest. This is impressive.

He tapped the test lightly. These aren’t easy questions. Not only did you get them right, you pointed out flaws in a few of them and even suggested better approaches.”

I shrugged lightly. I was trained that way. Solve the problem, then refine it.”

That habit hadn’t come from nowhere. It had been drilled into me.

X9 had always pushed me to think one step further, even when I got the answer right.

Alden let out a short laugh, clearly energized now. He stood and started pacing. Alright. You’ve made your case. You can skip the freshman courses.

He stopped and turned back to me. Actually, I’d like your help with something. I’m putting together this semester’s exam. Work with me on it.

I didn’t answer immediately, thinking it over for a second before nodding. Alright. But I’ll need guidance. I’ve never written exam questions before.

That’s what I’m here for,he said, waving it off easily.

When I left his office, I pulled out my phone and called Vera.

I need a place near campus,I said. I’m moving out.

There was a brief pause before I added, Also, set up a meeting with Mrs. Hart. I want you to tell her a story.

Elise might act on emotion, but her mother didn’t.

Her mother was the Luna of Creekshade Pack. She would understand exactly what that storymeant.

After that, I pushed everything aside and met Tessa at a bar not far from campus.

The moment I told her I was moving out, she groaned. You’re so lucky. My parents would lose it if I even suggested that.

I smiled, taking a sip of my drink. You’ll get there.

By the time she finished her cocktail, her mood had completely shifted. She leaned closer, practically buzzing with excitement. Tonight’s going to be good. Janice and Elise have to apologize to you in front of everyone, right? I’ve been waiting for that all day.
