“Bullshit!” A senior neutral-party councilor rose to his feet. “Her Majesty Norman has been crowned-the succession is legitimate. This is nothing short of treason!”

“A male child with no trace of spiritual power-how can he command respect?” the bald councilor sneered.

Suddenly, the alloy doors hissed open

Ryan entered with two Aegis operatives, pulse rifles held at the ready, taking up positions on either side of the entrance.

Margaret walked in, holding Norman’s hand. Today, she was dressed in a simple black trench coat and white shirt without jewelry. Cheiron followed, the document folder in hand.

The room fell silent.

“Don’t stop on my account.” Margaret pulled out the chair beside the head of the table for Norman, then leaned her hands on the polished surface, her gaze sweeping the room. “Who was it advocating for a Regent? Step forward. Let me see the face of someone so eager to share my burden.”

The bald councilor stood. “Ms. Greene, this is an Imperial Cabinet meeting. You, an outsider—”

“Outsider?” Margaret’s voice cut like ice. “I am the Regent appointed by the late Empress. Under Imperial law, I have the right to participate in and veto any Cabinet proposal. Do you question the late Empress final decree?”

She held out a hand. Cheiron passed her the folder, which she tossed onto the center of the table with a thud.

“Open it and see for yourselves,” Margaret said as she pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning back against

A nearby councilor, hesitating, picked up the folder and drew out the papers. His hands trembled as he scanned the first page.

“This… this can’t be.”

He passed it to his neighbor.

A wave of stunned whispers and sharp intakes of breath rippled through the chamber.

“The genetic comparison… Female?”

“Norman… is female?”

The bald councilor snatched the report, his eyes bulging as they traced over the conclusion and the nine authoritative signatures.

“A forgery! This is fabricated!” His voice cracked. “Lesley’s official announcement stated male. Margaret, you’d dare forge an Academy of Sciences report to cling to power?”

Cheiron took a single step forward, his calm demeanor a stark contrast. “This report was completed under

the direct supervision of me and nine academicians of the Academy of Sciences. All raw data have been synchronized to the Central Brain. Councilor, anyone doubting its authenticity is welcome to petition for Central Brain arbitration. Provided, of course, they are prepared to bear the charge of treason for slandering both the Imperial Academy of Sciences and the royal household.”

Complete silence descended.

Central Brain arbitration was the ultimate, immutable judicial process in the starfields. Cheiron’s confidence meant the report was an irrefutable fact.

Females were a rarity in the starfields. A female with legitimate royal blood was beyond precious. The calculating looks from the neutral faction and even some within the old nobility shifted as they reassessed Norman.

The long-term benefits of pledging allegiance to an Empress far outweighed propping up a puppet from a collateral line.

“Any other objections?” Margaret tapped the table.

None came.

The bald councilor collapsed back into his chair, the fight draining from him.

“Good. Then let’s discuss real business.” Margaret picked up the list Quentin had provided and dropped it onto the table. “Prince Darien was implicated in embezzling military funds and the unauthorized deployment of orbital artillery. Every name on this list is a co-conspirator”

Her eyes found Ryan. “Arrest them.”

At Ryan’s signal, Aegis operatives flooded the room. They seized the listed individuals, clamping heavy- duty mag-cuffs around their wrists.

“Margaret! This is a purge! You’re settling personal scores!” the bald councilor shouted, struggling against the hands holding him, his cuffs clanking,

Margaret rose and walked over until she stood before him.

“You’re absolutely right. It is a purge.” Her voice was low, deliberate. “Got a problem with that? Do you have

a single shred of evidence proving you didn’t conspire with Darien?”

He had no retort. Dragged from his seat, he was hauled out of the chamber,

Nearly half the seats now stood empty. The remaining councilors sat in stunned silence.

Margaret turned and walked back to Norman.

The child sat in the oversized chair, small back straight, posture perfect.

Margaret addressed the room, “Very well. From this moment, Norman of the Earhart family formally assumes governance of the Empire. All Cabinet proposals require her review. If anyone disagrees, speak

now.”

In the heavy quiet, the senior neutral-party councilor who had spoken earlier stood.
