The phrase “come back with us” seemed to dissipate some of the cold severity around Baar. He dismissed Cheiron with a glance and simply reached out, wrapping his fingers around Margaret’s wrist.

“Let’s go.” He started down the corridor, pulling her along with his long strides.

Cheiron watched them for a moment, his grey eyes fixed on their joined hands. Without a word, he fell into step, positioning himself on Margaret’s other side.

“Your Grace, mind the steps,” he reminded gently, his hand coming up to hover supportively near her elbow.

The three of them walked abreast down the hall. Norman, teddy bear in arms, trotted alongside, her large eyes darting between the adults, sensing the peculiar, charged atmosphere.

Outside the Cabinet building, the afternoon sun was harsh.

Ryan and the Aegis squad stood guard by the hovercar. Spotting Margaret, Ryan began to salute, but the motion froze halfway as he registered Baar beside her.

Snapping to full attention, Ryan delivered a crisp military salute. “Commander Iverson!”

Baar’s cold gaze swept over him. “We’ll settle your accounts later. Can’t even guard a damn doorway properly.”

Though Ryan now served directly under Margaret, his roots were in Baar’s command. He didn’t dare retort, quickly moving to open the hovercar door.

Margaret helped Norman in first, then slid into the back seat herself. Baar followed immediately, his large frame taking up a significant portion of the space as he settled in tightly beside her.

Cheiron observed the occupied back seat, his expression unreadable, before opening the front passenger door and taking his place.

The hovercar lifted smoothly, charting a course for the villa by Emerald Lake.

Silence filled the vehicle. Baar leaned back against the seat, his head turned to study Margaret’s profile, his grip on her wrist unwavering.

Margaret didn’t bother pulling away, Letting him hold on, she rested her head against the window and closed her eyes.

Norman sat quietly on her other side, fiddling with his teddy’s ear, occasionally sneaking glances at Baar.

From the front seat, Cheiron watched the pair in the rearview mirror for a fleeting moment before turning his gaze forward to the traffic lanes ahead.

Timothy and the twins will be waiting at the villa.

It’s going to be a lively evening.

Margaret mused to herself, a faint, imperceptible smile touching her lips behind closed eyelids.

Evening settled over Emerald Lake, warm yellow light spilling from the villa’s windows. The long dining table was unusually full.

Margaret sat at the head, a glass of water at her elbow.

Baar occupied the seat to her left, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal powerful forearms.

On her other side, Timothy was busy swiping through pages on his Holo-bracelet, periodically depositing a piece of expertly deboned fish onto Margaret’s plate.

Cheiron sat beside Norman, deftly cutting the girl’s steak into neat, bite-sized pieces.

Norman, having endured a long day at the Cabinet, was eating with focused gusto, cheeks slightly puffed. Tyrone and Quentin sat at the far end of the table, eating their meal in quiet unison.

A soft whirring sound announced Primo’s arrival. The robot sported a comically tall chef’s hat, its two mechanical arms carefully balancing a large, steaming pot of braised starbeast stew.

“Host! Special starbeast stew. I accessed the Federal Logistics Division’s recipe database and cross- referenced it with Commander Iverson’s documented flavor preferences. Spice level increased by three percent. Please enjoy,” Primo announced, its screen flashing a proud expression.

Baar’s fork paused mid-air. His brow furrowed sharply, golden eyes narrowing as they fixed on the sleek metal shell.

“You accessed the Federal Logistics database?” Baar’s voice held a mix of simmering anger and blatant curiosity.

He knew this contraption was Margaret’s companion system, but he also knew the grade of the Federal Military’s firewalls. “Federal security nets are top-tier. How does a cooking appliance breach them?”

Primo’s screen switched to a smug, glasses-pushing emoticon. “What’s the big deal? I share a foundational database layer with the Interstellar Central Brain. Your Federation firewalls are about as effective as a one- way pane of glass to me.”

Silence, thick and heavy, blanketed the dining room.
