The corridor outside the meeting room was deathly quiet. The heavy alloy doors slid shut behind Margaret, sealing the assembly of old nobles inside the conference room.
She led Norman by the hand, but paused as she pushed open the second set of doors leading into the main hallway.
A figure stood silhouetted against the floor-to-ceiling windows at the far end.
Baar leaned casually against the wall, dressed in the deep grey uniform of a senior Federal commander, his posture ramrod straight despite the casual pose.
At the sound of the doors, he turned. His golden eyes found Margaret instantly, locking onto her with unnerving precision.
Pushing off the wall, he strode over, his legs covering the distance quickly. He stopped before her, looking down.
“Heard you tore them apart in there,” he said, his voice roughened with fatigue. Days of hard travel showed in the faint shadows beneath his eyes.
He seemed more controlled than the last time she’d seen him, but the inherent, simmering dominance was still there, woven into his bones.
Baar stated, his gaze burning into her, “It’s handled on the Federal side. Tomorrow morning, the official diplomatic recognition from the Federal Foreign Ministry arrives at the Cabinet. Norman’s legitimacy as the Empress will be recognized. A bilateral cooperation framework will be established.”
Margaret met his stare. “Fast work.”
Given the historic animosity between the Federation and the Empire, pushing through Federal opposition that quickly meant he’d undoubtedly used an iron fist behind the scenes. His methods were typically blunt and brutal, yet he had smoothed her path with terrifying efficiency.
Baar took a step closer, raising a hand to gently cup her chin, his thumb brushing over her skin.
“You’ve lost weight.” He frowned, disapproval sharp in his tone. “What the hell are Aegis’ useless lot doing? Can’t even stop one old bastard. I’ll have Ryan’s hide when I get back.”
She didn’t pull away, letting him hold her chin.
“I’m fine. Eating and sleeping perfectly well. Shouldn’t the illustrious Federal Supreme Commander be ou his own turf? What are you doing here in the Empire? Checking up on me?” she said, her eyes scanning his uniform, still bearing the dust of travel
“Coming to see you. If I didn’t see you soon, I wasn’t sure I could stop myself from bringing the fleet and leveling this damn place,” Baar answered, utterly matter-of-fact.
He wasn’t joking. News of the orbital cannon incident had reached the Federation days ago; he’d nearly flipped his command desk in rage.
A slight tug on her skirt interrupted them.

Norman, clutching her teddy bear, peeked out from behind Margaret. She looked up, curiosity and a healthy dose of awe mingling as she studied the tall, intimidating man.
Baar’s golden eyes dropped to the red-haired child. His expression remained neutral.
“So this is the new empress?” Baar raised an eyebrow, releasing Margaret’s chin to give Norman a once-
over.
Despite the intimidating aura, Norman straightened up, mimicking the formal posture he’d seen adults use. “Hello. I am Norman.”
Baar gave a soft, derisive snort. He had little patience for soft, fragile younglings, but for Margaret’s sake, he forced his tone to soften a fraction. “Got some nerve, kid. Stick close to Margaret. Don’t cause her trouble.”
Norman nodded earnestly. “I’ll be good. I won’t make Margaret worry.”
Just then, the subtle rustle of fabric sounded beside them.
