Chapter 25 The Cunning Village Keeper
Chapter 25 The Cunning Village Keeper
Alden wore the Eye of Purity and instantly noticed that everything around him became incredibly sharp and clear.
At a distance of 500 yards, he could see a mosquito buzzing by and distinctly observe the intricate details on its wings.
This sensation… was incredible!
Archers need exceptional precision, and the Eye of Purity was a perfect match for him.
Even in the late stages of the game, or during a time of great catastrophe, the Eye of Purity was an extraordinarily powerful equipment.
“Adventurer, did you happen to eliminate Sam and Seth?”
Village Keeper’s gaze carried an unexpected hint of significance.
Alden suspected that his actions would be noticed once he finished the quest, so he didn’t try to deny it.
“Yes.”
Village Keeper’s look became more complicated. “Are you aware that Sam and Seth were both Roland’s apprentices? If he finds out you killed them, he will surely seek revenge.”
Alden pretended to be terrified. “Village Keeper, what should I do? Should I stop taking on village quests, and will you allow me to leave the Rookie Village now?”
Village Keeper waved dismissively and chuckled. “Don’t worry. Even though Roland is strong, I still have the final word in this village.”
He then added, “However, Roland is ambitious, so caution is necessary. I’ve heard that he’s been spending time with Old Barrel at the bar lately, and Old Barrel often ventures into the wilderness to help him search for ores.”
Alden raised an eyebrow. It seemed like a new quest was on the horizon.
“Village Keeper, what do you need me to do?”
Village Keeper gave a look that suggested he was ready to impart wisdom. “It’s simple, just cut off his left and right arms, then go kill Old Barrel.”
Ding! “Village Keeper has given you a quest.”
“Quest requirement: Eliminate Old Barrel.”
“Quest penalty: None.”
“Quest reward: Unknown.”
Alden was a bit concerned. “Village Keeper, considering my current abilities, isn’t killing Old Barrel too difficult?”
Village Keeper nodded. “Old Barrel does have some skills.
“But he’s often drunk. If you manage to poison his wine barrel, it could have a surprising effect.”

Hearing this, Alden hesitated. “To be honest, I don’t have any poison.”
Village Keeper paused for a moment before taking out a small vial.

“This is the Mandrake Elixir I’ve kept for a long time. It’s colorless and tasteless. Just add it to Old Barrel’s wine, and he won’t notice a thing.
“Once he is poisoned, his combat ability will be reduced by at least half.”
Alden accepted the Mandrake Elixir with a grin. “Alright, I won’t let you down. I’ll take care of Old Barrel.”
With that, he prepared to leave at once.
But just as he was about to go, Village Keeper suddenly called out to him.
“Frost King!”
Once again, he addressed him by name, no longer referring to him as just an adventurer.
“You killed Sam and Seth, but do you know who was behind Elvaris‘ death?”
Alden raised an eyebrow.
As expected, Village Keeper was starting to suspect him.
He remarked, “I’m not sure. Shortly after Shadowrend and I dealt with Sam and Seth, I heard that Elvaris was killed.”
“I understand.”
Village Keeper smiled knowingly.
Alden realized that his brief response would likely fail to earn Village Keeper’s full trust.
But that didn’t concern him.
Even if he had doubts, they would only relate to his connection with Roland.
After all, Roland was the only person who could potentially challenge his authority as Village Keeper of the Rookie Village.
As for Alden, no matter how strong he was, what did it matter?
He would eventually have to leave for the main city. He couldn’t remain in the Rookie Village forever.
What he didn’t realize, however, was that Alden had other paths available to him.
After leaving the Rookie Village, Alden sent a message to Shadowrend, as they had added each other as friends after their previous
transaction.
At that moment, Alden noticed that Skyspire Shield had sent him over ten messages.
“Frost King, I’m offering 200 million. If you join, you will become the guildmaster of the Skyspire Shield.”
“Frost King, are you there? When will you come to the main city to give me some guidance? The price is negotiable.”

Since Alden had been preoccupied with his own matters, his messages were set to “do not disturb“.
Regardless, Skyspire Shield was his first ally.
Alden replied, “Do not disturb, currently occupied.”
Afterward, he headed to the location shared by Shadowrend.
At that moment, Shadowrend was in the middle of fighting a level 10 Twisted Treant.
When Alden showed up and defeated the Twisted Treant in front of him, Shadowrend approached.
“Shadowrend, what’s the next quest the Village Keeper gave you?” Alden asked.
Shadowrend realized he was already aligned with Alden and answered openly, “Village Keeper assigned me to look after Old Barrel, the bar owner.”
Upon hearing this, Alden’s gaze sharpened. “Village Keeper also instructed me today to eliminate Old Barrel.”
“How is that possible?”
Shadowrend felt a little perplexed.
Being told to protect someone on one side and kill them on the other seemed clearly strange.
However, Alden already had a theory forming in his mind.
It was clear that Village Keeper was trying to deceive and trap them.
As for why, it likely involved the Mandrake Elixir.
If his theory was right, the Mandrake Elixir wasn’t owned by Village Keeper but was taken from Roland.
