Chapter 10

Scarlett’s POV

My ears burned when I heard Faye giggle. It was annoying, and it made me aware that she had made her move.

I remained at the back of the crowd patiently, covered beneath the awning of the stone veranda, my arms crossed and eyes focused on what I came for.

Alexander’s voice rang out like that of a polished politician. More like the devil’s son. “Welcome, Alpha Lucien,” he said proudly and calmly.

I looked over at him and noticed the tension in his shoulders.

So, he was scared, huh? All he ever did was show off in front of me and act all high and mighty.

“And this is…” Lucien said, his voice full of disgust. He didn’t bother to hide it.

This was getting interesting. Let’s see what he says now. He’ll probably lie that I died or broke my legs or something. Anything to cover his ass. My mind raced with possible answers.

“Faye is my…” Alexander started to say, but Lucien cut him off.

Your what? Don’t you dare say anything else or I’ll rip your tongues out and feed them to the vultures. Don’t you dare disgrace me!

Lucky for me, Lucien spoke before I could fall apart. Again.

“Why is she here?” Lucien asked. “Why would you greet me with someone who isn’t your Luna?”

Dead silence fell instantly, and I smirked.

Welcome to the show, Alexander. Now you know what it means to be insulted.

I sensed the ripple shoot through the crowd, and I couldn’t be more pleased. There were some silent gasps and a few shuffling feet.

He’s going to get it. Do I come in or not? When would be the perfect time to make this show perfect?

Lucien’s tone remained calm throughout, but with every word, it was hard. His deep voice sent goosebumps across my skin.

“She’s not your mate,” Lucien added, his voice almost amused, “Or has the community site been lying? Last I checked, it still listed Scarlett Winter.”

The way he said my name made my legs jitter.

Faye didn’t back down. Of course not. She stepped forward, her cleavage practically making an announcement of its own “Lucien,” she purred in a thick, fake voice, “a lot’s changed. If you want the real update, I wouldn’t mind showing you in private.”

She tried to touch his arm.

Lucien didn’t just step back–he recoiled, as if touching her would infect him. He turned his head slowly to Alexander, sharp and deliberate. “If this is how you treat those you claim as allies, then I’ll spare myself the insult.

There it was. The threat. It was clear, cold, and dressed in silk.

Chapter 10

Alexander’s fake charm dropped like a cracked mask. His lips thinned, and I could feel the mental command he sent to our Beta from across the yard.

I didn’t wait for anyone to act.

1 stormed forward, catwalking like the queen of the wild. My heels clicked against the cobblestones–one step, two, three- and I took Lucien’s open hand before I even reached him fully.

His palm was hot and solid.

Mama mia. Good gracious. What can this hand do? Stop it, Scarlett. You’re still married.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” I said, locking eyes with him. “I had something important to wear.”

The corner of his mouth lifted–barely. But it was there.

The color instantly drained from Faye’s face, and she looked shocked. I loved how she froze like a stick. It was even better when Alexander’s eyes seemed to burn holes into my spine.

“Now that everyone who matters is here,” Alexander said, the tension bleeding back into his voice, “perhaps we can eat. The banquet has been prepared.”

Of course. Redirect and control. He was slipping.

Lucien didn’t let go of my hand. “Lead the way,” he murmured.

I walked proudly beside Lucien into the banquet hall despite my heart racing wildly. Everything was in order. The long table had been painted silver and white, and the chandelier above was polished until it sparkled. Music floated in from the string quartet positioned in the corner, all ambiance and perfection–at least on the surface.

We reached the center of the room.

Alexander extended his hand. “Tradition,” he said, forcing a smile. “The first dance, remember?”

I took it only because I had to, not because I wanted to.

He pulled me to the floor. I choked when I felt his hand squeezing my waist too hard. It was as if he wanted me to remember that I was his.

Obviously you don’t know what the hell you’re doing,” he said under his breath. “Lucien isn’t the sort of man you can flatter, Don’t expect him to side with you.”

Says who? You? Oh, please.

I looked up at him with a blank expression. “Really? I stopped expecting anything from anyone a long time ago. Especially you.”

His jaw tightened.

Then the music shifted.

And Lucien appeared.

He didn’t ask. He simply walked up, pressed a firm hand to Alexander’s shoulder, and said, “Switch”

Alexander’s body stiffened. “Lucien-”
