Chapter 121
Scarlett’s POV

The night was heavy, but our heartbeats were steady as the three of us dressed in all black. Since it was nighttime, it wouldn’t be easy for anyone to see us, plus we also had masks on our faces–as Nick had suggested.
“We look like robbers,” I heard Arnold chuckle while adjusting his mask.
I laughed. “We are robbers indeed. We’ll steal Alexander’s captives.”
We crouched near the border. The forest was dense and familiar–after all, I had been here for years already. Lucien was by my side, his eyes cutting through the darkness, alert for any enemies ahead.
I knew he was worried about me meeting Alexander–not because he thought I still had feelings for him, but because what Alexander had done to me was traumatizing. Although he wouldn’t say it directly, I knew Lucien was afraid it might reopen old wounds in my heart.
Honestly, although I was a bit hesitant to go back to the Crescent Moon pack—and if I could help it, I really didn’t want to see or meet Alexander again–anything related to him churned my stomach. Memories of what he tried to do to me when I was locked up in that small house built by the butcher who stole Samuel’s identity would always resurface.
However, knowing Lucien was beside me, I knew he would do anything to protect me—just to make sure I was safe. That’s why I could confidently say that I could return there–to Crescent Moon.
In fact, my whole body still hurt, but I endured it. It wasn’t the kind of pain like being wounded by swords and so on, but rather an uncomfortable soreness that lingered from being with Lucien. He knew this too, which was why he always massaged my waist afterward to lessen the soreness I felt, and I knew he was worried about me right now.
“Are you really okay?” His voice was low as he asked, staring at me as if he wanted to gauge whether what I was about to say
was true or not.
I looked at him helplessly. “I’m fine, really. You’ve asked the same question twenty times already.”
“Just making sure. We’ll rest after this,” he stated calmly, and I just nodded my head.
I would surely take a long nap after this.
Arnold hovered beside us, unusually quiet, and Nick leaned against a tree with his arms crossed, his eyes sweeping over us as if he was guarding us in case something happened.
“Do you really want to lead the way? We can send a scout first,” I heard Arnold murmur in a low tone, just enough for me to
hear.
I nodded. “Don’t worry. I know this ground better. I remember where the guards rotate, where the walls crack, and where the patrols grow lazy.”
“What if Alexander has changed it?” Lucien asked calmly.
I shook my head. “Alexander won’t easily change the rotation and how Crescent Moon works. Those routines have been ingrained into them for years–it’s hard for them to change that, and besides, Alexander doesn’t have time for it either.”
“You seem to know him really well,” Lucien’s eyes narrowed, his tone dangerous.
I rolled my eyes at him. “Duh, wasn’t he always planning to make trouble for us? Where would he have time to devise a new plan for Crescent Moon? Besides, you sent him to the physician–it will probably take him time to heal, knowing you barely

let him live.”

Arnold exhaled sharply, trying to lighten the mood. “Okay now, robbers, we’ll infiltrate the Moon pack. Keep your voices and your footsteps as light as possible. We don’t want to be discovered and end up as headline news, right?”
I laughed and nodded. “Indeed. That would be embarrassing if it got out.”
“That’s right. That’s why we have to act like shadows and think like shadows,” Arnold said, smiling this time, clearly amused by the situation.
I helplessly chuckled and focused ahead as we moved like shadows–just as Arnold had said. We moved step by step, silent and low to the ground–except Nick and Lucien didn’t follow exactly. They looked as if they really didn’t care if someone saw them. Their hands were in their pockets, looking as carefree as ever, while Arnold and I crept ahead, tiptoeing and barely daring to breathe.
We both glared at them. “What are you doing?” I whispered fiercely.
Lucien and Nick both answered, “Walking. Following you both.”
I gritted my teeth. “If we get discovered because of you two, I swear-”
Arnold did the same, though his eyes held a faint amusement.
I sighed, turning to lead them along a pathway I used to walk before. I guided them through a thicket, hiding a forgotten pathway–I never thought it would come in handy now. Every turn and curve brought back some memories I used to enjoy, but I held back from reminiscing.
After all, we had to free those captives first.
As we neared the patrol, I raised my hand to halt the group. Two guards trudged past, their posture sloppy, clearly bored with their routine. My lips curved bitterly, “Still lazy as ever.”
If I were still there as leader, I would have already disciplined them–like I used to. It seemed they had slipped back into their old habits.
I felt Lucien lean in. “Timing?”
“Every six minutes they change sides,” I murmured. “On my mark.”
We waited, then slid through like shadows the instant the guards turned away. The thrill of it made my pulse quicken, but I didn’t falter.
Through hidden passages and across crumbled walls, we slipped deeper into Crescent Moon. The deeper we went, the stronger the ache and nostalgia in my heart grew. I once ruled these halls and did all I could to improve this pack–and now, it seemed everything good I did had been swept away, and things were back to how they used to be, before I led.
Inside, the air was foul, filled with the stench of unwashed bodies and stale blood. Ten figures huddled in the darkness, skeletal and trembling. Their eyes were hollow as they turned toward the slightest light.
“I wonder how Caleb is doing?” I heard a woman mutter as she leaned against a man.
“He’s doing well for sure. Our son is smart. He’ll survive,” the man assured her.
“This is our last day. I hope to see the Luna one more time, to beg for her forgiveness and hope she doesn’t hate us for turning our backs on her when Alexander brought that wicked woman,” another muttered, eyes closed.
“I should have escaped from Crescent Moon right away after learning our Luna left,” someone else voiced.

I couldn’t help but purse my lips as I went over to their makeshift cage, then glanced at Lucien. “Can you break their cage?”
After all, his strength was impossible to comprehend, just like when he broke the thick chains on me before with his bare hands.
He nodded and stepped forward. When the once–proud people of Crescent Moon saw someone approaching, they became alarmed.
“W–What are you doing? It’s not our time to die yet!” one yelled, and the others echoed.
