Scarlett’s POV

As soon as we arrived back at the Nightshade, the two warriors on night duty at the entrance stood up and greeted us.

“Alpha. Luna.”

I nodded at their greeting and thanked them for their hard work before we went inside. We finally made it back after stealing -freeing–Alexander’s captive. Nick and Arnold had just managed to catch up after Lucien had assigned them to some important tasks.

“How was it?” I asked Arnold.

His dimples appeared; his eyes sparkled with delight, and he gave me a thumbs up. “It was a job well done. No one noticed us. I never imagined that the Crescent Moon Pack would be so easy to infiltrate. If we really wanted to bomb them all, they wouldn’t even know who planted the bomb in the first place. They’re too complacent.”

Nick also spoke. “Their Alpha was too complacent, too.”

Arnold chuckled. “He wasn’t acting like an Alpha–he was too dependent on his late Luna, who managed the pack for him. It also seems that he doesn’t even know the shortcuts and hidden tunnels in his own pack.”

Indeed. After all, he usually dumped the work on me and left the documents he was supposed to review for me to handle. I was the one buried in paperwork while he just relaxed and trusted me to do it. I would only report the important events to him–things like wars, merchants, or shipments that needed discussion.

If I’d really wanted to hand the Crescent Moon Pack over and remove him from his throne, I could have done it in an instant. But I remained loyal and devoted, seeing him as my debtor.

Who would have thought that everything would end up like this?

But thanks to that experience, my eyes were finally opened–and because of it, I met such amazing people.

“A–åre we really welcome here?” Alisa’s question snapped me back to reality.

I looked at her and the others, who were cautious with every step they took. I gave them a reassuring smile and nodded. “You are. So lift your heads. You’ll soon be part of our family.”

Tears welled in their eyes and they hurried to thank me and Lucien immediately–they also thanked Nick and Arnold for helping them escape.

“By the way, you’ll see your son later. He is probably-”

Before I could finish my words, a small figure came running towards us. “Mama! Papa! Grandpa! Aunties and Uncles!”

He called to them all, excitedly hugging everyone before running back to his mother and clinging to her waist, burying his face in her stomach as he cried hard.

I let their reunion take place before turning to Kathleen, who was smirking as she walked toward us. It looked like she had been the one to bring Caleb out.

“That brat is too whiny. If I hadn’t heard about your return, my ears would’ve bled by how he kept asking me the same question over and over.” Kathleen complained, her hands in her pockets.

I chuckled. “He just missed his parents and was worried we might not be able to rescue them–that’s why he was fussing.

Kathleen rolled her eyes. “Speaking of which, why do I feel like I’m always left behind, huh?”

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, come on. You never invite me to raid other packs or fight alongside you. Do I look like my head is full of muscular men or something? I trained, too! I can fight! And even if I ever got caught–and my captor was someone fine with fine abs–I still wouldn’t sell any information!” she defended herself energetically.

“Pfft…” Arnold covered his mouth and hid behind Nick, who wore the same poker–faced expression.

Seeing we were looking at him, he coughed. “Don’t mind me. Continue, continue.”

I helplessly looked at Kathleen, who seemed genuinely offended. “It’s not like that, Kath. We know your abilities, and value them, which is why we let you stay here.”

I elbowed Lucien secretly for support, which he immediately understood.

“Indeed,” Lucien said. “We had you stay here because you’re capable of managing the pack. Knowing there’s someone like you in charge while we’re away, we can face our enemies with confidence.”

“Really?” she asked.

I nodded. “Really.”

She smirked, and seeing this, I knew we were safe. “That’s good. I’ll manage the pack well while you two handle other

matters.”

We weren’t joking–no one could do a better job than her at keeping the pack running when Lucien and I were away.

“Uh… Luna.”

I turned and met Alisa’s hesitant eyes. I smiled and nodded, letting her know she could ask anything.

“What should we do now?”

I glanced at them. There were a total of eleven survivors from the Crescent Moon Pack who wished to pledge loyalty to Nightshade.

I glanced at Lucien, waiting for his cue.

Lucien looked at Kathleen. “Go call the council and prepare for the ceremony to accept their oaths. They’ll renounce their old ties and swear themselves to Nightshade.”

Kathleen blinked, clearly surprised at this sudden turn of events, but accepted at once. “As you command, Alpha.”

She turned to the eleven, instructing them to follow her. Before leaving, she looked at me and winked, as if to say Lucien didn’t know her secret.

I just smiled. He already knew.

Her smile faltered, but she didn’t say more and quickly guided the eleven to the ceremonial hall, calling for other witnesses, council members, and the priest.

I glanced at Lucien. “Shall we go too?”

His hand was still at my waist, massaging it gently. “Not sore anymore?”

“They’re really opposites,” I commented as I watched the two head to the ceremonial hall.

Lucien nodded. “Let’s go.”
