Before I could linger, the door suddenly creaked open. I looked up and sow Katleen, her checks fented and breathing hard, but her expression was serious–different from the playful one who usually waved me with Laden
“What’s the matter?” I asked and stood up.
She grabbed my wrist. “You need to come with me?
I didn’t get the chance to ask why before she suddenly dragged me away,
We headed toward the messenger stables at a brisk pace. The tang of hay and hone sweat hit me before I even saw the
I saw Faye, speaking to a young courier whose satchel bore the seal of Kade’s territory. Her smile was bright and polite, her voice low, and she was holding an envelope–1 recognized it; it was mine.
It had my seal on it.
I gritted my teeth and walked toward her to grab it from her. But before I could reach them, she ‘accidentally dropped in into a water trough.
“Oh, dear,” she said, her tone syrupy with false concern,
The courier looked guilty, glancing between us as I arrived.
I didn’t fish out the envelope that was wet and soaked with water. I glanced at it. Half of the ink had bled into unreadable swirls, the edges dripping. My message was destroyed.
I’m so sorry,” she said with false sincerity,
I looked at her and then at her belly, then crossed my arms and smiled. “It’s fine. I understand that you’re having a hard time holding it because of your belly, I’m not mad
I saw her expression change for a second before she smiled again. “Perhaps I can rewrite it for you? Make sure it’s delivered correctly this time?”
I took a fresh sheet from the courier’s satchel, sat down on the nearest bench, and rewrote the statement myself. Each word was deliberate, my script steady even as my pulse hammered.

When I was done, I folded it, scaled it with wax, and pressed it into the courier’s hands. “You deliver this exactly as it is,” I said. “Do you understand?”
He nodded quickly.
Faye’s smile didn’t waver, but her eyes were sharp. “Always so particular, Scarlett. One might think you don’t trust anyone.”
“I don’t, I said, and before I left, I sneered and looked her from head to foot. “I hope you can restrain Alexander, especially since that scum keeps bugging me.”
Before she could reply, I had already turned my back and left.
I was about to walk in the direction where I left Kathleen, when suddenly a scout ran toward me, dirt streaking his boots and tunic, and asked to speak with me privately.
I nodded and followed him.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“I saw Alpha Alexander near the southern border,” he said. “He was speaking with Beta Kane.”
My throat tightened. “Speaking? Or arguing?”
“Didn’t look hostile,” the scout admitted. “Couldn’t hear what they were saying.”
I nodded, forcing my face into stillness. “Thank you for telling me.”
He bowed and left.
Inside, Kaya was a low growl, pacing harder now. This meant something.
I had to believe in Kane, who had been working with Lucien for decades now. It was impossible for him to betray us easily.
Right?
I took a heavy breath and massaged my temples. These events were stressing me out. I didn’t know which one I should deal with first.
Besides, what was Lucien doing? Had he found Kane and talked to him? Did he know about this?
I let out a heavy sigh and bypassed the study, when I happened to see Lucien, who was preparing to leave for Kade’s meeting. His coat was buttoned.
I was just about to pass by when his hand caught my arm–not roughly, but enough to stop me.
“Don’t let him get under your skin,” he said. I knew without asking he meant Alexander.
I met his eyes. “Then don’t let Kade get into yours.”
We held each other’s gaze longer than we should have. There was something unspoken there, heavy, pulling at both of us.
He was the one who let go first, stepping back. “Lock the doors. No unnecessary visitors.”
“A scout came to me and said that he saw Kane talking with Alexander,” I said softly.
Lucien’s eyes narrowed but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he just flicked my forehead. “You should take a rest for now. I

know that the current events have tired you!
I nodded and stopped overthinking things. I will.”
Then he was gone, the echo of his footsteps fading into the night.
“Scarlett?” Kathleen’s voice.
I pushed back the blanket and opened the door. She stepped inside, holding a sealed envelope.
“This was delivered just now,” she said, her brows drawn together. “By a young Omega boy. He insisted it was for your hands only.”
I took the envelope, noting the slightly smudged ink and uneven fold. My fingers recognized the handwriting before my eyes confirmed it.
Kane.
Breaking the seal, I scanned the brief message.
‘Meet me at the old watchtower at noon. Come alone.
No explanation. No greeting. Just a command wrapped in familiarity.
Kathleen studied my face. “What is it?”
I folded the note and slipped it into the drawer of my desk. “Nothing urgent.”
She didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push.
As soon as she left, I sat on the edge of my bed, the letter still ghosting against my palm. Every instinct told me I should take it straight to Lucien. But another part of me–a sharper, colder part–knew Kane wouldn’t speak freely if Lucien was anywhere near.
If he was going to say something I needed to hear, I wanted it unfiltered.
The training yard was already humming when I stepped outside. Blades clashed in practice, boots scuffed the dirt. My attention landed quickly on the cluster of warriors near the eastern fence–because Faye’s voice was carrying far too clearly.
“She certainly keeps herself busy,” Faye said loudly, her tone dipped in honey. “Scarlett seems to prefer private meetings with men who aren’t her mate.”
A few heads turned toward me. The warriors‘ glances slid quickly away when I met their eyes, but the damage was done. Whispers spread like wildfire when the spark came from someone like her.
I kept walking, ignoring the bait. Kaya’s growl simmered in the back of my mind, but I clamped down on it. Giving Faye a reaction was exactly what she wanted.
Still, as I passed, Faye smiled sweetly. “Enjoy your…inspections today.”
I chuckled and gave her a smile. “Of course, I’d enjoy every peace of my life since no matter what I do, as long as I’m not a mistress who destroys someone’s marriage, I’m good.”
Before she could respond, I added, ignoring the fury in her eyes, “Right, you’re overstaying your welcome in our pack. You

I just laughed as I was leaving.
I saddled my horse and left the packhouse. Kathleen caught me just as I was tightening the girth setyy
“Where are you headed?” she asked.
“Border patrol inspections,” I said easily.
“I’ll come.”
“No need,” I replied, swinging into the saddle. “It’ll be quick.”
She hesitated, her eyes narrowing with that sharp intuition she always seemed to have. “Fine. Pat be careful?
I nodded and rode off before she could ask anything else.
The old watchtower sat on a rise overlooking the river, its stone walls damp and mottled with moss. I dismounted and tied the reins to a low branch, the quiet pressing in around me.
Kane was late. The minutes stretched, each one tightening the coil in my stomach.
Finally, footsteps crunched over the gravel path. Kane rounded the bend, his hair damp with sweat, his eyes flicking over the tree line before settling on me.
“Thanks for coming,” he said, voice low.
“Why here?” I asked.
“Fewer ears.” He exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Alexander isn’t going to stop, Scarlett. He’s using me to get to you.”
The words hit like cold water. “Did you meet with him willingly? Is that why we haven’t seen you in the pack?
Kane looked away. “It wasn’t…like that.”
“Then tell me what it was like.” My voice sharpened, slicing through his hesitation.
His jaw worked before he answered. “Years ago, before I joined Lucien’s pack, I was attacked by rogues near the eastern ridge. Alexander was there. He-” Kane’s throat tightened. “He saved my life. I would’ve been dead before anyone found me.
I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic about this for some reason. Alexander had done the same thing to me back then—which led to the life that I’m currently fighting right now.
A bitter taste filled my mouth. “And you’ve been carrying that debt ever since.”
“I never thought he’d call it in,” Kane said. “But he is now. He wants me to get you to hear him out before the vote.”
1 stepped closer, my gaze locking on his. “And what do you want?”
“I’m not going to betray you,” he said quickly. “But if hearing him would stop him from making a bigger mess-
“I’ll hear him when the council is done,” I cut in. “Not before. I won’t give him the satisfaction of thinking he can pull my
