Chapter 54

Morning light seeps through the curtains, cool and pale. I let out a yawn and stretched my arms before I stood up and folded my blanket replaying the scene last night.

Not the reception where I was being the talk of town, not when Faye spilled my dress, but rather the moment Lacien’s mouth was on mine and the way he helplessly clung to me on my shoulder, inhaling my scent while waiting for him to cool down

Kaya was also restless from it, pacing in my chest as if she too, couldn’t wait to claim him as ours.

My thoughts were taken back when a knock came and before I could say something, Kathleen had already stepped in with a folded piece of paper in hand.

“Council’s courier just arrived. Final round of ‘clarification‘ meetings before the vote and they want you today.”

I take the notice, scanning the neat script. “They’ve scheduled each Alpha and Luna separately.

“I’ll get my coat,” she says and was about to move but I stopped her.

Shaking my head, I sighed. “It says here that I have to arrive alone so I can’t bring you.”

She frowns. “They’re trying to get you. Damn them.”

“Yeah, I murmured, shrugging my shoulders. “Can’t help it. It’s their orders. It’s not like I can defy them anyway.”

Kathleen sneered. “Who knows what Alexander and Faye whispered to the Council.”

I just smiled at her. “It’s fine. I’ll go there to meet them.”

“Then you should be careful. I’ll tell Lucien about this.” Kathleen said and I didn’t stop her.

“Okay then, I’ll leave that to you. I’ll go now.”

By the time I reach the council building, the corridors are hushed. The designated chamber is at the far end–high windows, heavy doors. I pushed them open, expecting a table of council members.

Instead, only one man is inside.

Alexander.

A surge of anger rushed into me. “You deceived me?!”

He was casually leaning against the polished table, dressed in dark formal wear, looking every inch at the Alpha. His expression is unreadable as his gaze landed on me then his mouth curves up after.

“I didn’t deceive you. The others will be late,” he says, as if it’s nothing. “Which gives us a moment to talk to each other.

My expression hardened and my fist clenched. I looked at him hatefully. “You manipulated the time you send in my letter.”

He shrugs his shoulder. “It’s not my fault that you didn’t fully verify it.”

“Alexander!” I exclaimed, huffing in fury.

Chapter 34

Every instinct says turn around and leave, but before I can. he steps forward. Not touching, rux by king in a way that I could accuse him of, but angled just enough to make leaving feel like giving him the upper hand.

“Go back to you woman. Alexander. Just what the hell do you want from me? 1 angrily shouted, glaring at him.

But he didn’t mind it, instead he looked at me with soft expression that made my skin crawl. “You are my woman, Scarlets!

I let out a mocking laugh. “Woman‘ Have you forgotten what you have done to me, huh?! Do I look like a garbage collector to you?!”

“I was wrong, Scarlett.. it’s just that my wolf can’t refuse her. He wants her and I want you. He said with a pleading tone that almost made me puke.

“Bullfuckingshit, Alexander! You’re full of crap!”

His voice drops, coaxing. “I still remember our time together. I remember when you used to look at me with love-”

Before he could finish speaking crap, I cut him off. “Now I don’t so fucking let me go

“I can’t and I won’t let you go. For what? To let you be with that Alpha Lucien?” He sneered. “You can tell yourself you’ve moved on, Scarlett. Keep telling that to yourself. But when the bond breaks, you’ll feel like you’re losing a limb. And when that happens… will Lucien still want you? A broken Luna?”

I let out a laugh and looked at him mockingly. “Keep telling that to yourself then.”

“Scarlett!”

“Fucking what? Don’t fucking call me. Just hearing you spout full of crap, makes me want to puke. Kaya growls inside me, claws scraping. “Lucien doesn’t define me, how much more of you?*

He circles slowly, like a predator tracing its territory. “You think that law will save you. But what you don’t understand is. you’ll come back. You’ll come back because no one knows you like I do. No one can match what we had.”

“What we had,” I say sharply, “was built on what you wanted – never what I needed”

Before he could speak, I added. “What fucking you know me better than I do? Are you sick in the head? This place isn’t for you, visit the hospital for you to get checked.”

Alexander’s smirk fades just slightly, the edges of his control tightening. “You talk like you’re free already. But you’re not. Until that vote is counted, you’re mine.

I take a step toward him, forcing him to adjust. “If you think a council ruling decides who I belong to, then you’ve never understood me at all.”

His eyes flash. “I understand you better than he does.”

Before I can answer, there’s a sharp knock. The door opens, and Lucien is there.

The temperature in the room changes instantly.

“You’re not on her schedule, Alexander, get lost,” Lucien says, his voice cold steel.

Alexander takes a leisurely step back, then gives a mocking bow. “Then I’ll see her at the vote.”

He brushes past Lucien without another word, but the tension he leaves behind is thick as smoke.

Chapter 34

Lucien closes the door, his jaw set. “Why didn’t you leave the moment you saw him?”

“Because running would have looked like fear, I answer evenly.

“You think standing there with him was better?”

“I’m trying to remind you in case you forgot,” he says.

I rolled my eyes at him. “It seems that you’re sick too. Go accompany Alexander to get checked.”

“Don’t lump me with him.”

“Your topic is way off.” I spoke.

“All I did was to remind you, in case seeing Alexander makes you forget about it.” Lucien calmly said.

I pressed my temples and glared at him. “If you say anything about it, I’ll leave.”

The air between us sharpens. I broke it first, brushing past him toward the door. “We should go. Someone might get the wrong idea if we’re alone in here too long.”

“That’s the least of my concerns,” he mutters, following.

In the corridor, Kathleen falls into step beside me. She doesn’t speak until we’re clear of the council building. Then she slips

a small, folded note into my hand. “Found this in your desk drawer when I was tidying. I don’t think it’s yours.”

My fingers tighten around it. “Where exactly in the drawer?”

“Under your appointment ledger,” she says. “Looked like someone slid it there when you weren’t in the room.”

Lucien’s eyes narrow. “You lock that desk.”

“I do,” I say, slipping the note into my pocket. “Which means whoever left it had help.”

We reach the packhouse. Lucien pauses at the base of the stairs. “Read it now. I’ll check the pack later to find the spy.”

“I’ll read it in my quarters,” I reply.

“I’ll walk you there,” he says, no room for debate.

Kathleen gives me a small look
