Scarlett’s POV

I hadn’t managed to convince Lucien yesterday to leave his roomhe had forced me to sleep again, to get some rest. In the morning, when I saw that he was still sleeping deeply, I stared at him for a few minutes before I gently removed his hand from my waist.

The process was so nervewracking that I was sweating while trying to move his hand smoothly and gently so he wouldn’t wake up.

Maybe because he was too tired, and it was his first proper sleep in the last four days, he didn’t wake up- when before, he would have woken instantly at even the slightest movement from me.

I let out a sigh of relief and hurried out of his room, then went to mine to take a bath and change my clothes.

I did all of that in just two hours and thirty minutes before heading to the courtyard.

My cloak clung to my shoulders as I walked carefully and gently to the courtyard to see what the warriors were doing.

My arms and legs were still trembling, sweat beading on my forehead, but I felt more alive than ever.

This was my first time stepping into this courtyard again, and this time, I was Scarlett Winter, not the Luna of Crescent Moon or Alpha Alexander’s Luna.

The Omegas were the first to notice. Their hands froze over the washbasins, soap sliding forgotten into the water. A boy carrying firewoodthe same boy who was always so energetic it was contagiouspaused.

I saw him drop his load of firewood, rub his eyes, then look at me in disbelief.

Lady Scarlett! You’re finally awake! We were so worried about you!His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.

I let out a soft chuckle and patted his head. Yeah, I’m good to go now. I’m sorry I worried all of you.”

He shook his head and smiled. It’s a good thing you woke up, because those bad guys are spreading rumors about you!

I chuckled, trying to hide the tremble in my legs and forcing myself to stand still. Yeah, I know about it.”

An Omega looked at me and smiled. How do you feel, Lady Scarlett?

I smiled and gave them a thumbsup. Better than ever. I feel free right now.

They both laughed.

One warrior, passing by, also paused and looked at me, eyes wide. Seeing me looking at him, he lifted his hand and waved, so I waved back.

He then turned and called to the other warriors as well.

Lady Scarlett is awake!he shouted, as if wanting everyone to know.

I helplessly chuckled as the other warriors gathered around me, their eyes shining as they looked me over from head to toe.

How are you doing, Lady Scarlett? I feel like with your current state, Alpha Lucien wouldn’t let you out.

She probably just escaped.”

I let out a soft chuckle. I’m doing well. And yes, I did escape from him just now.

Laughter rippled through the group. Barely kicking, if you ask me,someone teased.

Oh please,I shot back. I’ve seen you trip over your own sword strap. Don’t make me embarrass you in front of everyone.

A chorus of chuckles erupted. One warrior flexed dramatically. Careful, or I’ll show you what these arms can do.

I tilted my head, unimpressed. What, lift a loaf of bread? Maybe carry a bucket of water?

Gasps of mock outrage filled the air. Another warrior pointed at me, grinning. You’re lucky you’re still recovering, or I’d wipe that smug look off your face in a spar.”

Funny,I said, raising an eyebrow, that’s exactly what you said the last time. And what happened? Oh right, you ended up flat on your back while everyone laughed.

That earned a round of hoots and claps on the back. He’s never living that down!someone shouted.

Len’t remind me,the embarrassed warrior groaned, covering his face.

I laughed, relief lifting a little of the weight from my chest. Their laughter was infectious, their teasing welcome, reminding me I wasn’t alone anymore.

That I was finally back. To Nightshade. To Lucien.

You’re here, Sca. I’ve been looking for you! Are you okay now?

I paused and looked to my left, where Kathleen approached, waving her hands in excitement.

Yeah, just stepped out to get some air,I said with a smile. I turned to the warriors and waved. I’m going. You

all better train hard before Lucien gets here and sees you slacking off.

The warriors laughed. You too, better get some restotherwise, we’ll easily beat you!

I just laughed and walked away with Kathleen.

How did you even get out of my brother’s embrace?Kathleen chuckled.

I smirked. Secret. Then I asked her, Is he still sleeping?

Kathleen shrugged. I don’t know. I’m afraid to check on him.

I shook my head helplessly as we walked farther. By the time we reached the garden arch, my strength gave out. My knees buckled.

Scarlett!Kathleen immediately caught my arm, alarm flashing in her eyes.

I’m fine,I hissed under my breath, forcing myself upright, even as black spots danced before my eyes. Justa little dizzybut I’ll be fine.

Before Kathleen could argue, the heavy thud of boots sounded on the stairs. Lucien was already crossing the courtyard, his cloak billowing, his jaw tight with fury.

Scarlett! His voice cut through the air, disturbing even the warriors practicing nearby. He reached me quickly, his hands hooking around my shoulders, gripping me as if afraid I would disappear.

His eyes, dark as storm clouds, bored into mine. What in the Goddess’s name are you doing out here? Do you know how worried I was when I saw you’d disappeared when I woke up? I thought I was just hallucinating that you’d woken up!

I was about to pull free, but when I heard his words, I slumped and pursed my lips. II can’t just stay inside the room. I felt suffocated and needed fresh air.

He let out a helpless sigh. I know that, but next time, call me. You’re not fully healed yet, and I’m afraid something might happen to you againlittle wolf

I just wanted to show them I’m not weaksince they wanted to see me, especially those enemies out there. I wanted them to see that I am still standing,I reasoned.

You call this strength? His voice dropped, rough with frustration. You’re pale as death, trembling on your feet. You should be in bed, not parading around like a martyr.
