Carole stood up and was ready to head back to her apartment.

Nelson leaned against the doorframe. In one hand, he held a cupcake. In the other, a small, delicate spoon. He calmly ate bite after bite while looking down at the little girl below him.

That cupcake was clearly something Nelson had improved himself. The frosting smelled rich and sweet. Even Caroline, standing nearby, caught the scent and felt a sudden craving for

dessert.

The little girl stared at the cupcake in Nelson’s hand. Her eyes would not move. She kept swallowing, over and over.

Nelson, as if on purpose, ate very slowly and ver

dramatically. He even smacked his lips.

Normally, Nelson had a stiff face. He rarely showed expressions, which made him look serious all the time.

But now, just eating a cupcake, he looked as if he were carefully tasting the best food in the world.

This time, no matter how badly the little girl wanted it, she did not dare rush over and grab it.

Instead, she gently tugged on her mother’s sleeve. “I want a cupcake too. I want a cupcake,” she whispered.

At first, her voice was small. Then it grew louder and louder.

The moment the little girl heard that, she completely lost it. She started crying even harder.

She screamed loudly, dropped to the floor, and rolled around without caring where she was. She yanked hard on her mother’s clothes and shouted again and again that she wanted a cupcake. She even demanded that her mother go snatch the cupcake from Nelson.

At first, the woman tried to soothe her. It didn’t work.

Then she started yelling at her daughter.

No one had gone to report it to the soldier. That alone showed how bad this woman’s reputation usually was.

On top of that, a sandstorm was raging outside. Most of the soldiers had been sent away to handle safety issues. There was no one on duty.

That was why this mess had gone on for so long without anyone stepping in.

The woman already looked miserable and was full of anger.

Now her daughter’s screaming gave her a pounding headache. The girl kept shaking her arm and pulling her hair.

Then she yanked right at the woman’s wound.

The injury, which had just started to scab over, split open again. Blood flowed out.

The woman’s whole body jerked in pain.

Without thinking, she slapped her daughter hard across the face. “Enough! You bastard!” she shouted.
