“Laura? What’s going on? Why are you sleeping here so early in the morning? Did you spend the night at the office?”

Marguerite hated to wake her, but letting her sleep at her desk wasn’t a solution. If she was that exhausted, she’d give her the day off to rest at home.

“Ms. Taylor, I'm so sorry,” she stammered, sitting up abruptly. “I couldn't sleep at all last night, so I came in early to catch up on a project, thinking I'd finish it and then go home. I must have just dozed off… I didn't realize how late it was. I'll get right to work.”

Laura felt terrible. She didn’t want to be a burden to her boss, who had already helped her through so much. She had missed a lot of work while dealing with her personal issues, yet Marguerite had never once complained, even taking on some of Laura’s tasks herself. She felt she couldn’t face her. That’s why she had come in during her sleepless night—to try and make up for the work she’d fallen behind on. But now, it seemed she’d only made things worse. She felt completely useless.

“Laura, look at what you’re doing to yourself,” Marguerite said softly. “You can’t let one failed relationship break you like this.”

“I’ve been through it, too, remember? And look at me now—I’m doing just fine. You know that relationship was a dead end. No matter what, life goes on. After my breakup, I threw myself into this studio, into creating my own brand. And now, I'm happy. I even found someone new.”
