Chapter 95
Hope’s POV

“H-how?” I stammered, looking around. I hadn’t even noticed his presence or heard his footsteps. Or maybe I had just been too preoccupied with my own thoughts to notice.
Before he could answer, we heard distant footsteps drawing nearer. Without hesitation, he grabbed my wrist/and pulled me into the closest room, which turned out to be the janitor’s closet.
Despite my racing heart, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the situation.
“The janitor’s closet?” I asked, looking around. Good thing it actually smelled nice, aside from the slight/sting in my nose from the cleaning agents.
“It’s fine with me if you want me to kiss you breathless in the hallway,” he said.
My smile disappeared as quickly as it had come.
He walked toward me, and in the cramped space, there was nowhere for me to go. I instinctively backed away but was immediately stopped by the bins behind me, leaving me with no choice but to stay exactly where I was.
He planted both hands on the bin behind me, effectively caging me in. His face leaned closer until I could smell the fresh mint on his breath. Despite the sweat glistening on his temples, he still smelled unbelievably good.
I couldn’t help but swallow as he smirked at me, his face inching impossibly closer,
“Why do you keep running away, hmm?” he murmured. “Are you afraid?”
I gulped again and slowly shook my head, not trusting my voice.
Deep down, though…
Maybe I was.
“Is it because you think I’m lying?” he continued, his breath fanning softly over my lips, making me bite down on the tender flesh without realizing it.
His gaze dropped to the movement. I watched as something dark flickered in his eyes, but he didn’t move an inch. He simply kept looking at me.
“Or is it because I’m telling the truth?”
“Are you afraid that I’m going to turn out like Connor?”
My breath caught in my throat as I looked up at him.
Despite the darkness clouding his gaze, I could still see the sincerity hidden beneath it.
“For one,” he said, his voice filled with unmistakable disdain, “I’m way better-looking than that bastard.”
A laugh nearly escaped me.
“Second, I don’t use other people to pay my bills. I’ve got more than enough money on my own.”
His lips tilted into the faintest smirk before he leaned in even closer.
“And lastly,” he muttered, now barely an inch away from my mouth, “he can’t score three consecutive goals like I did.”

His eyes stayed locked on mine.
“He can’t even score one in the national league.”
He tilted his head slightly.
“So even thinking that I’m anything like Connor is offensive, you know.”
The smile that spread across my lips came without warning.
He was right.
In the short time we’d known each other, I’d already learned just how different he was from Connor.
In fact, they had almost nothing in common… except for the fact that they both played center in hockey.
I looked at him quietly, searching his eyes. Then, against my own will, my gaze drifted to his lips.
My heartbeat stumbled.
Slowly, I looked back into his eyes.
“Fuck, Hope,” he breathed, his voice rough. “Do you even know what you’re doing right now?”
“What am I doing?” I whispered.
“You’re so clueless about how crazy you make me.”
His eyes searched mine as though he was trying to hold himself back.
“You know,” he continued, “this is the first time I’ve wanted to score three goals so fucking badly.”
A small, disbelieving laugh escaped him.
“Just looking at you from the bleachers had me completely riled up.”
His jaw flexed.
“I know you won’t believe me even if I tell you a hundred times.”
He let out a quiet sigh.
“Because you’re just that stubborn.”
Honestly, I understood every word he was saying.
But at the same time, it felt like they floated right over my head.
All I could focus on was his lips and how badly I wanted to kiss them again.
The fear that had been sitting inside me only moments ago slowly melted away.

The moment our eyes met, something inside me settled. For the first time in a long while, certainty filled my heart.
“I wanted you to score three goals really badly, too,” I admitted softly.
The corner of his mouth twitched.
It only took a millisecond after that before I felt Levi’s lips against mine.
